I just got a bunch of bulk packs of 22's and it got me wondering about how other people carry 22 shells if you don't have something like a mini mag box to carry them in.

When I am hunting in the woods, or just taking my rifle for a walk, it usually has a tube magazine and I don't need any more than that. If I have a single shot I have a couple of carriers I like- one is an Uncle Mike pouch that fits on a belt and has a velcro closure, but right now my favorite method is I have one of those spring loaded coin purse type things that was originally made for turkey calls, it is nice as it holds a couple dozen shells and you can just drop it in your pocket.

I used to like to use a speedloader pouch, it will either hold a full box of 50 or it also can hold a 10/22 clip.

For a 22 WMR I used to keep a 35 mm film can, it holds about 8 bullets and is cheap and convenient but I think the cans are going extinct pretty fast nowadays.

For bench shooting with bulk 22 ammo, I like to keep the bullets in a plastic cream cheese container, they are easy to grab, hard to knock over, and you just snap the lid on when done.

What are some other favorite ways of carrying shells?

Really makes me think back over a very long time. old I always just carried some in my pocket and some in the rifle/pistol/revolver. But, those were 22Rimfire Cartridges with the Hard Lube Coating. They didn't get dirt, pocket lint, or other stuff stuck to the Lube.

Now some of my most accuract 22Rimfire Cartridges have a Soft Lube coating and I feel sure it would hold dirt and trash very well, because the sticky Lube gets on my fingers by just handling them. So, the ones that go Hunting, go into a Plastic 50-count SGB CCI Container, which I relabel.

Then that CCI Container goes into a Crosman Pellet Pouch. It has two Velcro latches, one allows you to put it on your Belt and take it off without removing your Belt. The other Velcro latch holds the pouch shut. It is quite LOUD to open if you are trying to be quiet in the Woods though. So, it is best to do it when you plan to move or after taking a shot.
-----

On the Bench, I just use relabeled 100-count CCI containers, color code the Primer end of the Case, put a matching Color on a strip of Masking Tape which is on the Container, and Label the Colors to indicate the separate Cartridge Weights.

These El Cheapo Electronic Scales make Weight Sorting go real quickly. I lay the Cartridges on regular sheets of Paper with 10-Weights running down each side. Depending on the specific Cartridges, it might take 2 or 3 sheets to get 100 Weight Sorted. And some are much closer.

When hunting with a single shot I have the ammo in a 10/22 mag, I can just slide out a round as needed and they do not get covered in lint from my pocket.

Well, our local squirrel limit is 10 so I just carry 8 or 9 .22 bullets in a pocket, figuring I'll only get a couple of doubles........ dancing

I reuse the 50 and 100 pack plastic ammo boxes with the sliding tops from CCI and Remington.

For my survival pack, I have 2 boxes of 22 MRF ammo and 10 20 gauge shells vacuum sealed.

Try an Altoids tin. Your 35 mm canister will keep them clean and contained. You can also buy a cheap 22 mag and put it in your pocket.

Ditto. Just buy a few boxes and re-use them, or dumpster dive at the local gun range. Carrying them loose invites dirt and dings.

I like to use an old sock. Preferrably one with no holes!(Ha) They bunch up real nice and don't rattle around making noise. I usually tie the open end under my belt pretty snug. That way they are easy to get to and dispense real nicely.
Can carry and easy 100 plus rounds that way also.

I like those flat brown MTM cases. Each one holds 30 rounds and they fit flat in your pocket.

I have been looking high and low for something to go in my pocket that won't rattle to hold .22 rounds.

I want a rubber holder like this Otis brass scrapper comes in.

If I could put my hands on one to see how big those holes are I might buy that and use it.

I like the plastic coin holder idea. Especially if there's any need for stealth, I.E. squirrel hunting.

I carry loaded magazines. I hunt squirrels a lot in January and Feb. Cold its easier that way. These days I been shooting a 10/22 with a fixed 6 x on it. Last season I drilled my 40 squirrels with just 56 shots. Not bad. All head shots. Plenty of Squirrel tails for fly tying. I like Winter Squirrel best.

That has been working for me for over 40 years now. It is really rare for me not to have a dozen or more loose 22 LR shells in my pocket at any time.

Loaded magazines--and if I feel like I need more in case of an encounter with a large sounder of feral hogs, I take a prescription pill bottle full--with paper towel stuffed in it to keep it quiet.

I use a leather coin pouch with a snap to keep it closed. Made in Mexico I believe. I tried to find another at the market in San Antonio last year but they all have zippers now. Ok but I prefer the snap for speed and quite.

Mark I used to do a lot of hunting with .22 pistols and would dump three 50 round boxs of LR shells in a zipered tobacco pouch. This fit flat in a front pocket of geans or in a coat pocket in winter. The leather zipered tocacco pouch has a moisture barrer to keep yobacco fresh, and works well to keep the ammo dry in wet weather also keeps the ammo clean.

I still have mine someplace in my gun room, but I couldn't say where, because I haven't fireda 22 in ten years, though I have several 22 rifles and pistols.

I use a moose-hide coin pouch I made in a about half an hour. I cut a circle of leather out of a tanned moose hide, punched holes about 1 every inch or two all the way around the outer edge, and then threaded a moose-hide boot lace through the holes and tied the ends together.

Pulling on the lace at the knot pulls the sides of the pouch up and together.

So, when I used to shoot .22s fairly often in the field, I'd just pull the pouch part way closed, then dump a box or two of .22s in it. Then close it the rest of the way.

No rattles, cheap and quick to make another if you lose it, and plenty flexible to fit into the contour of just about any pocket except a watch pocket.

My local Walgreens drug store has small square plastic snap top pill boxes that hold 15 .22LR perfectly- which is just about a magazine load for my M39A.

Extra mags - for my guns that use mags.

I always save those plastic CCI shotshell boxes. They're flat, hold 20 rounds and fit nicely in the shirt pocket.

There are various commercially made ammo wallets. The one made by MTM holds 30 rounds of .22WMR and shorter ammo. I've never used them but they are supposed to be a little quieter than the hard plastic boxes. However they are also larger.

Those butt stock carriers provide quick reloads for single shot rifles.

I used Rem260's vacuum packed idea before. I seal them in 10 round single strips. But that's a lot of work and not everybody has a vacuum sealer. But this method keeps the ammo corrosion free for ever!

I've also been toying with the idea of making some kind of "speed loaders" for my M39A with either plastic or aluminum tubes.

I avoid carrying loose rounds in my pockets. They just pick up too much grit and pocket lint.

A M1 carbine 15 round mag pouch holds two 50 round boxs nicely.

Most of the time if they are not in spare mags they are loose in the pocket.

When I did that sort of thing a spare magazine plus the rest of the factory box of 50.

So never liked Speer-CCI long boxes! Not pocket friendly!

Here in Britland there was also a ten round leather WRIST bandoleer in 22 RF! It was ideal for quick-loading a single shot rifle if worn on the left wrist.

For my 10-22 in loaded magazines.

for actual "hunting" here in PA my 10-22 is not legal
(no semi-auto is) so I have a BL22 and for that I typically
will put spare ammo in a plastic film container.

If you take the time to "stack" the rounds in the bottom
you can fit 18 rounds in the bottom layer, then another
8 or 9 put in more or less randomly in the top and still get the lid on.

Also somewhere in an inner pocket of my hunting coat I have a 50round old school "cardboard" 50round box of 22LR.

I keep a few empty "Winchester Wildcat" boxes for "repacking ammo but when used for "repacking" other ammo I "seal"
the box with Scotch "blue" masking tape (it's easily torn and easily removed, but keeps the box closed)

20round CCI 22LR shot-shell boxes are "nice" but they tend to rattle, the 50round CCI stinger boxes rattle even worse.

Frankly I don't know why I bother carrying 80-ish rounds of 22LR ammo when the most I've ever used on live targets is a dozen.

But as all of it together weighs about the same as two king-size snickers bars...

Tag in it to tell which gun the ammo is for.

Like that coin wallet idea, a lot smaller and flatter.
