I just bought a Smith & Wesson 22A pistol yesterday does anybody have any advice or recomendations to get the best proformance out of this fun little gun. Ammo, grips, sights, upgrades and tweaks? Thanks in advance.

I've had a 4" model for years. When I got it, I tried about 15 different kinds of ammo and then mostly stuck with the most accurate and best feeding stuff. Fun gun to shoot and light to carry. Somewhere along the line, I broke off the lug on the bottom of the slide when I was trying to dismantle it one time (the slide is a white metal of some kind) That has never bothered the function or accuracy that I could tell. Since it worked so well, I never bothered to modify it in any way.

I have one. I cannot understand why it seems so much louder than my Ruger Mark II with its ten-inch bull barrel. There is a seven-inch barrel available for the S&W for just $112.

What would the advantages of the 7" barrel over the 5 1/2" barrel that I have on mine?

Longer barrels = higher velocity and greater accuracy. Bullet is pushed by gases for a greater period of time and riflings guide bullet for a greater period of time, leading to further stabilizing of it in flight. This is why target rifles typically have barrels 26 to 28 inches long, sometimes even longer...

I have one. Love it. Put a Red Dot sight on it and try different types of ammo at 25 yards. Mine is VERY accurate. Barrel length in a pistol is pretty much irrelevant if you are using optics, as sight radius is not a factor.

Does anybody know how to get the barrel off for a good cleaning? There is a checkered "plunger" right under the barrel at the forward end of the frame, but it seems frozen solid on mine. Any suggs?

Similar to the High Standard. If it is too stiff, just press it against a table top or something solid, or tap it lightly with a rubber or plastic mallet. That will loosen it.

I have a 22S and love it.
I have use it for hunting and it is icredibly accurate (scoped).

Put some WD40 or other light lube and move the plugger under the barrel. Do you have the manual?
If not you can get it on Internet from S&W I presume. Be carefull when you dismentel the pistol and do it at home or you will loose the main spring as it is a little triky.
Let me know if you need more help, I will try to find some pictures.
My pistol is as accurate as mosto .22 rifles and it loose only 10% of velocity comparing to a 16" rifle.
