I've been trying to find an accurate .22 single shot (preferably with a heavy barrel) for a while now, of course without breaking the bank. I've narrowed things down to a few choices:
Savage Mark I FVT. I like the Accutrigger a lot, but I'm not sure if the receiver is grooved to accept scope mounts or if the factory peep sights are easily removable. Anyone know for sure?

CZ 453 Varmint. I like CZ's set trigger in general, and this model can be equipped with a single shot adapter. It does have the heavy barrel, but also a higher price tag

NEF Sportster. This looks pretty good, except I have some reservations about the trigger and accuracy potential of this compared to a bolt gun.

This unit will be mainly used for precision work inside of about 20 yds, so accuracy is a prime concern. So far, I'm leaning towards the Savage - any other opinions out there? Any other choices I might have missed? I know there are some real olympic-quality rifles out there that would meet my needs, but I'll bet they are pretty spendy. Is the CZ worth its price?

have you considered a G2 contender or encore? you would be able to add barrels to the action if desired.

I have thought about the T/C offerings, but I don't think I am into the switch barrel mentality enough to take advantage of the whole concept. It would be an expensive way to get a single shot .22 (IMO). The more I look at things, the more I like that Savage.

If you are talking inside 20 yards I am not sure why you are so picky. Any of the "old" Anschutz model 64 actions, either in sporter or MS configuration should do the job with plenty to spare. You just have to find the right ammo. I don't know what they go for used, however.

Just a though, what are you shooting at under 20 yds.? You might find that some scopes won't focus that close.

well, expense is relative, but for a single shot with the best accuracy,I would opt for the Anschutz.Considering you're only firing at 20 yds.I've got a Marlin 39 + Win.63 that are every bit as accurate as the Anschutz.Maybe I just got lucky.Even a little Rem. 521 W/ peep sights would do at that range.Do they have gun shows in MN.?We have them once a month in Austin,+ one can usually find some pretty good buys on 22's.
