I recently picked up a Browning pump .22 Magnum, but with hunting season and the holidays I haven't even had time to test fire it. These seem to be rather scarce. Most have a gloss stock finish, but this one has what is claimed to be a factory oil finish.

Anyone have experience with this model?

I've handled them. What I've read, people like them . I've got the all steel, pistol grip BAR-22. Its a fun plinker. Ive never scoped it to determine accuracy levels.

Damn right its loaded, it makes a lousy club. -JW

I got a chance to zero a Leupold 4x on it over the MLK weekend. 50 yard group was about an inch with regular WW 40 grain JHP ammunition. Will try different ammunition to see if groups can be tightened. Trigger is very good for a rimfire and function was excellent.

I took my 3 22 magnums out last week to do some testing. I used 5 different loads in the three rifles. It was windy. The Win 40 was the most accurate across the board. None of the rifles disliked it. The all shot it in 3/4 inch groups or better. My Ruger 77 grouped it right at 1/2 inch. I should note that I was testing 3 shot groups just to see which loads warranted further 5 shot group testing. With all of the other loads at least one rifle disliked them. All of the rifles showed a distinct preference for one load over the other. It's likely yours is the same way. As it is, with that load you are minute of squirrel head at 50 and minute of rabbit head, blackbird and crow at 100. Cool rifle by the way. Pics?

Thanks for your observations. Other than the very rare and expensive RWS .22 Magnum ammo, I've found the traditional Winchester JHP to be the most consistently accurate among several .22 Magnum rifles. I tried a box of Federal 50 grain ammo and found it to be sorely lacking in accuracy. And the light-bulleted loads from Remington and CCI don't seem to want to hold very tight groups, either. The somewhat slow 45 grain Winchester Dynapoint has shown passable accuracy, but nothing stellar. I think the designers knew what they were doing when they settled on the 40 grain bullet as the standard for the WMR.

I had a couple of early Win mod. 61s in 22 Magnum, they shot about everything. My favorite turkey and javalina guns..Gave one to my son and another to a rancher that let me hunt on his ranch for years growing up..He was recoil sensitive and loved it so I gave it to him some years later..No telling how many turkey, hogs and Javalina, and tells me its a perfect whitetail rifle..I doubt he has ever shot one past 50 yards and all of them out the pickup window, mostly does for sure. Says its a way better killer than his old 25-20 and I don't doubt that.
