The bolt action Savage and Marlin are usually surprisingly accurate in the 17 HMR's. I might give the slight edge to the heavy barreled Savage. But either shoots very well. 1 inch or so 5 shot groups at 100 yards are the norm for these if you don't have too much wind.

Even a little better are the CZ 452 rifles in 17 HMR. Scroll down the page here for a report on the 452 in this caliber. Just below it on the same page are some groups from a Marlin 917.

The 17 HMR is a bit odd in that makers of the rifle seem to have gotten the chambers all made the same etc. better than usual. Even the cheapest of them seem to shoot as well or very very close to as well as very expensive rifles in that same caliber.

The CZ is a bit more substantially made with all metal and wood. But it or the Savage or Marlin will all do a great job for you.

if you're not totally sold on the HMR check out the mach 2. reason is price of ammo. i believe that they'll quit on the mach 2 before long, but if you lay in a supply it'll save much $$ you'd have to check around some, but last summer we bout a few thousand rounds at 2.99/box - beats 10.00 anyday its worth checking into at least

My local shop owner completely agrees with this statement and persuaded me not to buy a Mach2 because of it.

The bolt action Savage is a winner -- have two in 17 HMR for pasture poodle control -- they are shooters!

Get yourself a NEF Sportster.
They are solid little rifles, shoot quite well and are as cheap as dirt.
I have one in 17HMR with the heavy barrel, 4-12x scope and poly stock and it is my go to rifle for just about anything fox sized and below.

Well poop, I guess that means I'd better think about buying one just because, even though I've no real need or, until now, interest. It's a neat little round and I'd like to see it stick around

BTW I bought a 22 Hornet 'way back when they were about to become museum pieces (so they said), own a Remington Model 12 in 22 Rem. Special that I bought with 5 boxes of shells (happy day when those became available again!), and still regret not buying a Remington 17 RF in a Lousiana pawnshop back in 1985 or so becuase you couldn't get shells and it only had less than 2 boxes with it (o' ye of little faith)!

Ditto on the HM2! The lead ban in Cali may bring new life to the HM2. Very accurate, cheap ammo. If you are worried about it, buy 5-10k rounds at $3 like most of us have!

I love the Mach 2! I have kimbers, Remingtons, marlins (the model is 917M2S) get it if you can, if a solid built rifle, the triger needs to be lighten, but very accurate.

I put a Mueller APV scope on them, nice setup.
used it on foxes, coon and yotes, my dad took the largest and last coyote in his life with it. Cheers and blast away!

Gotta bump this up. I have both rim-fire 17s. I sold a 450$ ruger 22lr because I had a marlin 17hmr and a savage 17mach2. Those 2 rifles kick %^&*.

I have a Savage 93-17 in HMR. Shoots very well. I paid $275 from a private sale. I recommend it for those looking at the bigger 17...
