The 17 HRM is a nice small game, varmint, and target cartridge that works well if you don't try to stretch its capabilities. Since the bullets are light, they are pretty wind sensitive, so its a good idea to bring something heavier along when the wind is blowing.

I have 1 Marlin and 3 Savage bolt actions in 17 HMRs, plus a Ruger 10/22 Magnum conversion. I have 3.5-10x, 10x, and 4-12x scopes on these rifles and find the higher magnification is useful when shooting small targets, like ground squirrels. I have not had the best success with CCI ammo, but my rifles are very brand and bullet sensitive, so if the CCI ammo does work for you, try several other brands and bullets before you make up your mind.

I've had two. Don't have one anymore. The ammo cost got me. I shot mine like .22LRs. Given the price of ammo, that made for some expensive afternoons.

I agree with 260remguy, more magnification is good. It can be an incredibly accurate rifle. My CZ sure was. Almost wish I hadn't sold it because it was so accurate. Something with a top end of 12-14x would be what I would want.

Definitely try the different ammos. My CZ didn't care, but my Savage was very picky.

Have fun and welcome to AR.

I started with the 10/22 Mag conversions when ammo was cheap, less than $100 a brick and hard to find. As the price went up, I ended up converting it back to 22 Mag with a Volquartsen barrel.

Now I occasionally shoot the 17, but only in a Contender barrel. I'd rather shoot the Hornet in the Contender. More umph, less cost per round. It was fun, but just got too expensive.

I think that cheap rimfire anything is gone. Even when the current shortage ends it will be like gas the price will be higher and stay there, no more $15/20 brick 22LR. The 17 hmr is a great -my ruger 77 is capable of 1" groups or less no problem but it is really bothered by the wind.

I've got three that I use on prairie dogs out here in Colorado and Wyoming. Well, not right now because I'm in Iraq for a year as a contractor. All three, converted .22Mag Ruger, Savage left-hand bolt, and T/C Contender shoot magnificently. Scopes are two Leupold 4.5-14x and a Weaver 4-16x. The higher powers really do help.

my solution to the high priced hmr ammo was to pick up a mach2. ammo for that can be had for as little as 4/box if you watch for it, otherwise its about 5-6, less than half of the hmr round. same bullet, a pinch more powder, a smidgen longer case and now we charge twice as much bsflag

How do you like it? I've been thinking about this too since the cost of Mach 2 ammo is less than a lot of 22LR ammo now and the performance would seem to be on par with or close to what you'd get with a 22LR and the hotter, Velocitor, Stinger, or Quik Shok stuff.

Is the price lower just because of less demand?

i really like the mach 2 - enough so that i bout a couple more rifle for it. i know there's rumors floating around that its going out of production, so i just went out and bought a few thousand rounds (at 2.99/b0x). the hmr will outreach the mach 2 for distance for sure, but i relly don't care since if i'm shooting over 100, i'm not using a rimfire anyway. I think the demand for the ammo coupled with the ammo problems we are seeing today just put the mfgrs into a drivers seat and they are abusing that fact. i'm all for them making a decent profit, but i just hate gouging

I sold my Mach2, didn't seem like it could do more than a regular 22LR could do, besides I hear it's next on the list for obsolete cartridges.....r in s.

Outstanding for Racconn, Foxes and Crows, in my experience.

I like my 17HMR a lot. Didn't cost much money.
The NEF guns don't get a lot of love. I think this is a steal at $99.
Being a single shot, I don't blow through much ammo.
Very accurate. Mine likes the 20gr loads better than the 17gr rounds.
