A friend and I are driving to Fairbanks tonight and then flying out tomorrow morning. I wish everyone a safe and successful sheep season. I'll update when I return.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

I'm arriving in Anchorage on the 18th and into camp on the 19th. I can't wait. Good luck and safe hunting.

Good luck and safe travels to you guys. Post the photos when you score.

I'll get up there soon, but until then, help keep me dreaming.

Good Luck All,,

Be carefull and come back down the way you went up if it's gnarly country.

No sheep this year with a bit of barging to do and a hernia too.

Looking forward to pictures!

I tend to use more than enough gun

No luck this year. We had a tough hunt with few sheep, LOTS of miles hiked, 2 days of snow, and 5 days of rain. We ended up getting on a nice ram that just wasn't legal.

That's tough Brett, but that is part of hunting most of Alaska's rams.

My uncle drew a Wyoming bighorn 80 miles from his house, and hunted for 90 days, looked at every inch of the area and didn't kill a ram.

He has a team of horses, is fit for his age 65, and knows the area like the back of his hand. He never stopped hunting for 90 days and never saw a mature ram. They oversold the area.

In America the days of having a sheep tag and killing a ram are no longer hand in hand.

This was Union Peak above Dubois.

Big Wonderful Wyoming,
I have a tag this year just over the mountain from where your uncle had his tag. Things are much tougher than they used to be and when I've spoken with the biologist, he thinks a tag reduction in that whole range is inevitable.
I leave in the morning and will be in the mountains on Saturday to begin my full-blown backpack hunt. I'm getting too old for this stuff but hope I've got enough gas in the tank for one more successful backpack sheep hunt!
we shall see,
Zeke

There are a hundred threads if you go back on states that have done a poor job of managing sheep. Alaska and Wyoming are at the top of that list. We'll leave if for another thread.
