As a non Alaska resident from Kansas ( I have a brother that has lived in AK for 40 years) , I think that Alaska needs to make their laws to suit conditions there. NOT what some jerk in Washington DC (stands for "dunb clucks" )thinks is best for their wildlife. We have the tree hugging PETA a------s here jacking with us also. If the gentleman from MI & NY don't like Alaska laws, stay home. I don't go to NY because their laws don't suit me, and I would'nt spend a nickel there, and I'm sure thats not going to ruin their economy. There are plenty of people that DO care about Alaska and visit and hunt there. I visit Alaska often and enjoy myself every time, even if it is just setting around the kitchen table BSing with family. I will hunt there when I retire and can get there at the right time of the year. I love the state and would live there if medical problems would let me. I think there should be a bounty on bureucrats and politicians. I am going to join PETA (people eat tasty animals) shooter2

kmule; thanks for the tip on alaska moutaineering and hiking. they are a great shop. although i have not been there i have rec' excellent service from them. the guide i plan on climbing denali with in may of 05 referred me to this shop. as to why i would donate a mount. i like to look at trophy mounts. i don't care where the hunter that took them lives. to me, that is irrelevant. what counts is the specs on the animal and where it lived. i know that there are other people out there that enjoy looking at quality mount as well. thats why we look forward to seeing the mounts at the millenium, kodiak and anchorage airports, sears mall, etc. understand now. if museums only accepted art from local people they would not be nearly as interesting. a store open to the public should not have discriminatory policies toward anyone. res' or non-res'. as for the don't come here comments. i think ak. is great not sucky. like wise the people. the only ones i have had be less than courteous are the ones here, sometimes. i have not had a problem with the laws there yet, fortunately. i wonder how many of the residents commenting have actually paid a guide to go b.b. hunting. i'll bet a round of beers, not nearly as many as run their mouth. i have so i can talk. as for staying home. not likely, i am not much for that. i have a passport, time and money and i will go whereever whenever i like. if u don't like it, your welcome to picket me at the airport. i won't bring up stereotypes and prejudice, there is already enough of that here as it is. but, if your pickup does have rust, then i was not wrong. cold zero my s.u.v. is a mercedes, no rust.

cold zero - for whatever reason that SW didn't accept your trophies, it is their loss. I visited the store today and it looks good, similar to the store photos on their website. The employees said they have not received all their normal inventory yet and hope to have all by the grand opening on 2/28. Who are you climbing with (Denali) and what approach are you taking? As far as the vehicle issue, many of us Alaskans have a winter car / truck (sometimes a "beater suv" in my case) and then a summer car or truck - Mercedes is nice , I choose an Acura and a Chevy truck for better weather driving. The roads in the winter are fairly well maintained but you just never can tell what the other driver is going to do so a really nice ride in the winter is chancy. Whenever we get a chinook or warm spell, the roads melt off the ice and the number of fender benders skyrockets; some folks drive like they had never driven on ice before - take care and good luck and good weather on Denali - KMule

Kmule, you arent lying about the drivers. I have an '83 chevy half ton 4X4 in the back yard but unfortunately I cant get it past the 6ft high ice berm (thanks to the city plows) so I can drive it. Oh well, atleast I have insurance on my new F-150. The store was great. I noticed a lack of leupolds but they had a lot of burris and swaros. I didnt like the handgun display but otherwise they have everything a person could want.

Somehow managed to get back to SW at lunch and ended up in the hunting dept; I don't like the handgun display either, can't see any prices on the guns and it seems like it ties up a bunch of employees to hand handguns back and forth to folks. Maybe for security reasons? Also can't see any prices on ANY firearms from behind the counter because they all have small price tags. Found some good deals, the guys working there seem to enjoy it and are trying to do a good job (lunch time traffic today was busier than yesterday, in spite of the slick roads) - managed to walk out again without buying anything, at this point I'm still comparing prices. Heard they sold three S&W 500 mag revolvers on day one to the same guy?!?! Nice inventory and supposedly more on the way. KMule

Compare prices all day long. SW will beat it most of the time. And if your like me, your sick of ordering expensive gear through the mail, without the chance to touch, see, or try it on.This is a true "one stop shop" They have everything. My buddy and I tried to mess with them opening morning. Do you have a SS .243WSM? Yes! How about a .223WSM? Yep. You can't find these guns in town, but they had them in-stock at a good price. Sold Me! Don't get me wrong, I'll still shop at Barney's, Wild West, and some of the other local stores. But not at Cabelas, Sports Authority, Wal-Mart, Fred Meyer anymore. Why?

akhunter - I was reading through this thread again and something you wrote got my attention - I thought that Winchester made a 270, 7mm and 300 Short Mag only - and they made the 223 Super Short Mag and 243 Super Short Mag (and recently announced a 25 caliber Super Short Mag) - is this correct or am I mistaken? Thanks - KMule

I got to see Sportsman's Warehouse for the first time. Its great to see a store devoted to hunting & fishing! Hopefully they can make it work out.Sportsman Warehouse corporation has a huge advantage over most small retail stores. Because they are a wholesale disturber ship, and are able to buy direct from manufactures. I think in time they will take out some of the older established mom and pop gun stores . If they have achilles heel it their dependence on coleman products. They will never be able to compete with Sam's, or any of the big box stores. You only have to look at Sport Authority to see who wins when you go against Sam's. If you are a duck hunter, reloader you have to love this store. I will shop there evey time I come to Anchorage

Went to Wasilla for the State Hockey playoffs last week: While there went into Anchorage, Wife wanted to do some shopping. First stop was at Sportsman's Warehouse, I wanted to see the place. While we were looking at tents upstairs, wife spotted the ladies clothing section. Lost her for the rest of the afternoon. She found the same Woolrich blouses and vest she had been looking at here in Fairbanks, for half the price. She spent over $250.00 just on clothing for herself, nothing to do with hunting. Clothes to wear to work in the office. Togeather we got everything from boat anchors to archery supplies for the kid. Clothing for all. Wish Fairbanks had a place like that.

Hey, Dude: "thank you for reminding me why i left that state and thank you for harboring the clintons so we dont have to deal with them." A friend of mine is from Arkansas. He said that the folks back home were excited as could be when Clinton won the presidency. They were glad as hell he was leaving the Governor's Mansion.

You chide AkDude: "u probably could not hack it here and had to leave." I don't know about him, but you sure have me tagged. No way could I "hack" NY (although, given a huge machete, I'd love to give it a good try). I damned sure couldn't hack LA, where I grew up. So I left and came here. And, damned, wouldn't you know it? Thirty years later, half of LA is following me. They "can't hack it" either. I guess they just can't learn Espanol fast enough. The problem is that some of them are bringing that wacky California mentality with them. Better if they stayed in LA and "hacked" it like you are doing in NY. Birds of a feather are best flocking together.

"I think you guys should contact your legislaure and tell them to nip the tie with the rest of the U.S." Great suggestion, Bill. But been there, done that. You just can't get legislators to do ANYTHING anymore, even if it is a great idea. We even have a political party up here called the Alaska Independence Party, and true independence is what they want. The problem is that there are too many greedy folks up here that just love Uncle Sam, Uncle Ted (Stevens), and all the stinking money they represent. I'd much prefer peaceful, independent poverty to extortion, servitude, and "wealth". Maybe when all this damned Permanent Fund money is finally embezzled and gone the two-legged wolves will follow it out of here.

Rob, I like the way you think: "Now, if we can get a non-resident hunter boycott. It is not that I have anything against non-residents, but if there is a boycott then all those damn guides will have to close up shop and I can hunt in peace without being buzzed continually by Supercubs spotting game for their clients. And maybe some of the transporters will go out of business too. Perfect." Now, this isn't "anti-non-resident-ism". This is classic "flock-those-who-have-been-flocking-me-ism". You think we can get "rural" subsistence drum-beaters to boycott now?
