A snow machine can go a good distance.

I was talking to a co-worker who has taken his snow machine as far as 1200 miles round trip. He said there is gas to buy in all the villages he has been to.

There are lots of small air services the connect to many villages.

This might seem kind of a dumb question, but for all those communities that are not connected to the road system and rely heavily on boats, what happens in winter?

I assume the smaller boats are pulled out to avoid the ice, but what about the ones which are a little too big for that...do they risk being damaged?

Also how do people get about?? I assume locally they use snowmobiles, but what if then need to go a good distance? Are you confined to flying?

regards,

Pete

For communities with a big boat or two, there's a set of rails that the boat gets hauled up, high and dry, on. Getting around from village to village is by snowmachine. Going farther is by any of the multitudes of small aircraft services.

Silly Question: So what happens in winter?

We make babies.

In all seriouness I prefer winter over summer because of the snow and ice making long distance traveling much cheaper with a snomobile than a boat. I have put several hundred miles on a snowmobile in a single day just to look for caribou and wolves let alone shoot one. Winter is when the fun really starts.

Thanks Gents,

It amazing the distances you guys go on your snowmobiles...for some reason I thought they were used for just 20 or 30 mile trips...

I will remember all this the next time 2" of wet, slushy snow brings the UK to a halt!

Regards,

Pete
