Well the kid made his old man quite proud over the Alaska Day holiday weekend. He got to go on a hunting trip with the men after just turning 13. We were going to hunt 3 days over on the N.E. end of Admiralty Island. He pretty much had his mind made up that he was going to shoot a buck only, even though either sex is legal.

We tried a variety of methods: still hunting, rattling, calling and grunting. Saw 4 deer the first day, but no horns. Called a medium-sized doe into point-blank range, but he held fast to his buck-only goal. On the second day, we covered my secret honey hole meadows. Called in some does, one with this year's fawn. Getting kinda late in the day and one last good meadow about 1/4 mile from the beach. We sneaked into the downwind edge and immediately spotted a doe feeding about 100 yds away out in the open. Then I spotted a buck bedded out in the open (pretty much right where photo is taken.) The kid say him too. He had a good rest on a dead log. I asked whether I should try to get him to stand up by calling, but he said he had a good shot (he was bedded down facing us, but his chest was exposed.) He nailed him with a 150 gr partition from his .308 Ruger.

A beautiful ending to a gorgeous day in S.E. Alaska. I was glad I toted the digital and film cameras along to capture the moment. I told to kid he had to promise that, when his dad was old and feeble, he had to tell me the story about bagging his first buck!
