Hey Fellers, As I have been doing for the last several years, this fall I'll be using a boat to hunt for moose. I need some advise on the best kind of floating waterproof scoped rifle case to buy for this years hunt and where to buy it. In the past I have used a variety of cases that either aren't made for water resistance at all or float but don't keep out the rain. My rifles have suffered accordingly. This fall I'd like to use my .375 Ruger to hunt with and would rather not soak it just because it's what I've done with every other firearm I've taken. I'd like to buy a floating waterproof soft case if you have any suggestions. Thanks in advance for any tips.

Just buy one of those gunboots that is made out of the same material as the waterproof bags. tie it to the boat. if it goes over board, pull it back up and remove the gun. Had to do it a few times with my zodiac, rifle never got wet. Now I'm smarter on stowing my rifles. Koplin makes a floating rifle case that will float a 12lb rifle. It is called the Big Bore Scopetector, retail price @$69.00. For better waterproffing I would do as Joel suggests. I have a couple of cases that I think Cascade made just like a dry bag, long and thin for long guns. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

There's plenty in Cabela's and ebay, waterproof, padded, and floating combos. Emphasis is based on accuracy, not POWER!

I was hoping to find a "Dry Bag" style gun case like you guys mentioned. I have a floating guncase from Cabela's that I'm sure would float a rifle, but it is zippered so all rain gets in no problem. Any suggestions for finding a "Cascade" type dry rifle case?

Scott, the one I use sounds like what you are looking for, unfortunately I cant remember where the hell I picked it up at. Its orange, rolls up like a drybag. has hooks on it where you can tie it to the boat (I used D-rings). shove a soft cased rifle in it and it floats decently. Mine is marked "gamma....float gun...bearcountryalaska" Knowing me, I bought locally. I need to find some 9.3 bullets and if I see one I will pick it up for you. Thanks much guys! Really appreciate the generous offer Joel. I've been resisting e-bay, but did follow Tsturm's link, registered and bought one that had a buy now button. I'd certainly like to have another, so if you bump into one Joel I'd buy it from you. Again, thanks for the help, mighty good of you fellows.

Kolpin makes a dry bag for long guns, I got mine at Boondocks, but I'm sure others carry them. You can stuff two rifles or a rifle and shotgun each in a soft case inside the dry bag. Just remember that the gun and soft case need to be dry before putting them in the drybag. I've learned the hardway that it doesn't take much moisure to make a gun rust :O __________________________________________________ The AR series of rounds, ridding the world of 7mm rem mags, one gun at a time.

I've used a soft floating gun case with a marking "GunGuard" on about 4 or 5 float trips. I tested it by throwing it into a swimming pool and in the little while (less than 5 minutes) that I had it in the pool no water got to my gun. On float trips I usually carry a Ruger M77 stainless/synthetic scoped with a Leupold so it doesn't bother me if my rifle gets wet. I hunt in the rain anyway. I also tie the floating gun case to the boat/canoe/raft in case of rough water or clumsy handling on my part so that I can retrieve it if it goes overboard. Namibiahunter .

I would think the pony tail would act more like a mop than an umbrella. A thin mop, yes. A graying mop, true, but a mop none the less. As far as a sinking boat, I'll be using a canoe this year the same as I did a couple of years ago, so I think odds are at least fair I'll go over at least once. When we canoe'd last time I had a "floating gun case that like I said, let all the rain in. I like the rifle drybag routine. I'll try and call Boondocks tomorrow. Thanks again fellas, you're very generous with your time and interest.

Scott, If you would move into the 21st cetury and use a stainles synthetic rifle you'd have less to worry about. Blued and wood stocked rifles are not made for Alaska. Oh! The canoe would roll over if you weren't so clumsy. Can walk on a roof but can't keep upright in a canoe! Butch, I actually was considering getting 2 H&R Handi Rifles and welding them together. That would be the same thing. Right? Two single shot rifles in one package. I just don't see why that would not work just as well as your multi thousand dollar rifles. Mark MARK H. Butch, No I didn't do anything with that little 16ga. I'd like to but just got busy with other stuff. NE, Seriously, no kidding, I used to be able to load my 70# lab in the canoe after a water retrieve without going over,.......most of the time.
