Slightly off topic...

Can any of you Alaskans update me on Salmon and Halibut fishing in the Prince/Wales Island and Ketchikan area?

Fishing in the creeks is outstanding on the island. Silver, pink and sockeyes. I don't think they have any kings. you should call the Game & Fish dept, they were very helpful when i talked with them. You should hunt black bear while you are there. They have some great ones.

there is a prince of whales chamber of commerce
and the visitor guide is real good.
but you really need to talk to a fishing guide about time and place.
good bear season and good salmon season dont really overlap
yes bay lodge near ktn is on mainland , can even see brown bears there.
lots of cool places
pow is about 150 miles long and has some real good roads

I'd go to POW in July or August.

Lots a day charters out of Craig - excellent saltwater fishing. Every bit as good as Sitka and a little more protected water. Shelter Cove Lodge is a nice place I've stayed at on business and watched their boats come in at the end of the day and gone down to the fish cleaning station. Sunnahae (sp) is another place that might be a bit cheaper.

If you want DIY, there's a place in Coffman Cove you can say and the place will rent you a 16' Lund skiff.

Lots of places to watch black bears fish too.

You could PM Joel/AK as he has a one-man charter operation out of Craig. Just need to catch him when he's not commercial fishing. Don't think he hangs out here much any more.

Muskeg, I think you have me mixed up with someone else.

I'm up here in liberal los anchorage and one of the few alaskans that dont fish.

A lesson in irony

The Food Stamp Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is proud to be distributing this year the greatest amount of free Meals and Food Stamps ever, to 46 million people.

Meanwhile, the National Park Service, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, asks us... "Please Do Not Feed the Animals." Their stated reason for the policy is because "The animals will grow dependent on handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves."

Thus ends today's lesson in irony.

I just got my Joel's mixed up.

You could go with Cap'n Joel:

http://www.trollpow.com/

$250 for two guys and 6 hrs of fishin' ain't bad and he's a hard-core local fisherman.

Kings are his fav.

I look at the CPUE (rod hours per fish data) quite a bit:

http://www.sf.adfg.state.ak.us...index.cfm/FA/R1.Home

If you compare Ketchikan vs Craig for the last week in July, you will find (all rod hours per keeper)

Kings - 75 hrs vs. 25 hrs
Halibut - 1.5 hrs vs 4 hrs
Silvers - 1.5 hr vs 3 hrs

Pretty typical results for all of "prime time"

And Joel's rod-hrs will be better than the average . . .

I fupped duck some of those numbers (transposed)

Craig rod-hours are consistently lower and every bit at good as Sitka.
