Alaska has lost a dear friend, Margaret Murie. I just heard on the radio this morning she had passed away at age 101. Mardy, as she like to be called, was a pioneer in Alaska, being the first woman to graduate from the University of Alaska at Fairbanks. I have read several of her books, one in particular "Two in the Far North" about her travels with he biological researching husband. He was Olaus Murie and together they traveled and studied the wilderness of Alaska, while he researched Caribou, eventually writing the book on them, still used by biologist. They went to Wyoming and studied the Elk, also doing the basic biological research at Jackson Hole. ----- They were very active in all things Alaskan, helping establish the Arctic National Preserve, that today is being looked for Oil exploration. John Denver wrote a beautiful song about them and their love for Alaska and each other, and how they loved to dance the Waltz unter the North Lights. ----- Sorry for all the nostalgia, I just thought she needed remembering on this new Forum, from an appreciative reader of their dedication to the great state of Alaska.
