I heard that due to the bears eating fish that the meat is no good to eat and does not have to be salvaged in the fall.Is this true for all coastal areas? If so what do you do with the carcass? It's always so quiet when the goldfish die.(Bror Blixen) DRSS Merkel 470 NE

Correct, you only have to salvage the meat in the spring. From June 1 -dec 31 you may use the carcass of a bear for bait. Shoot one, skin it and see if another one walks up on it. A lesson in irony The Food Stamp Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is proud to be distributing this year the greatest amount of free Meals and Food Stamps ever, to 46 million people. Meanwhile, the National Park Service, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, asks us... "Please Do Not Feed the Animals." Their stated reason for the policy is because "The animals will grow dependent on handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves." Thus ends today's lesson in irony.

I took my first spring lack bear in SE last year and the meat was extremely clean & good eating. Also in agreement with bear guides note on the "Alaskan Cleanup Crews". After my 1st Brownie was taken in May 05. We were kinda curious on what a fresh carcass would look like 5 days later in AK? Notice all the torn up grass that's been tromped down to a dirt circle around the carcass. God forbid a hunter were to get an injury and pass out for any length of time. Sure makes you wonder... There are bigger bears in Alaska. But I doubt if there are any nicer looking than that one. I doubt I will ever hunt a brown bear. If I do that is the type of bear I would look for.

Bears that have not been into fish or guts are awesome.I have eaten both grizzleys and black bears in Alaska .The berry feed bears of the fall are the best eating wild meat you will ever eat.You do have to trim off all the fat so the meat will no be greasy.I ate three bears a friend gave me the other year that he and others had taken.I ate my first grizzley that made awesome sauage. It was an interior bear that had no fish just roots and berries and baby moose.Dont knock bear meat till you try it.A good black bear is kinda like pork .Grizzley seems more like beef to me.I get alot of bears that other people are afraid to eat because they dont know how to fix it or cut it up to cook.I usually smoke it and make sure its cooked enough to eat.You have to cook bear well done .You can get alot more from a bear than just a rug.

I hope all the folks out there that eat bear meat is aware that almost every bear in Alaska has trichinosis. Yea, I know, no problem if it is cooked properly. For some reason, I don't want to eat meat that may have little worms in it. If you've ever seen anyone with trich, you would not want it. I'd rather not take the chance. If I have to salvage the meat to be legal, I obediently obey the law, salvage the meat, then throw the damn stuff away. The law doesn't say you have to eat the damn stuff, it just says you must salvage it for human consumption. Another tip.....If you are skinning, gutting or doing any work on a bear, use gloves. Bears are nasty things, they have several known diseases, and who knows how many unknown diseases, which can be transfered to humans. I'd as soon eat a dump rat as a bear.

BW, Except for his foot pads, nose & forehead "diamond" rub, there isn't a spot of rub anywhere on him. His forelegs, ears, face and lower hind legs are just really dark brown, almost black in color. The rest of him is a light tan chocolate. The fur behind his neck is about 5" deep. One heck of a shaggy beast is what he was. p.e. n' sitka
