I don't hear much said about the Speer Mag Tip bullets for use on large and/or dangerous game. Speer recommends the 350 gr. in .458 for big bears.....anyone have experience with this bullet? Phil Life Member- NRA & SCI

I don't have any experience with big bores. I did pick up some 150 308 and 160 7mm on close out. I have not used them on game. My older Speer reloading manual says they are hot cores with 40% thicker jacket and skived tips for opening at low velocity. They fell in between the hot core and the old dual core grand slam in toughness. I would suspect their performance would be similar to the newer single core grand slam which I hear is good. I can't imagine a 350 grain bullet of this construction wouldn't work well on a big bear but I have no experience. Just know a little about mag tips in general.

I shot one 500lb bear with a 350 416 at 2450 got about 30 inches of penetration and recovered bullet weighed 235 expanded to 50 cal. The 2nd on passed completely through follow up shot just for insurance. The only reason I recovered the first one was the bear was laying down when shot and the bullet after breaking both shoulders traveled down the opposite leg. Several deer shot one head on complete pass through front to back. Don't know if I would use them on cape buff but other things they seem to work well.

I've used the 350s both 416 and 458 on brown bear. They work great. I've Never had one not put a bear on the ground. I don't really ( like) the flat nose on the 458/350 gr bullet. But I know they put it there so the lever action shooters could shoot it in their rifles. My experience with them and the Hornady 350 gr 458 bullet proved to me that they ( Speer) were the way to go in the 458. The Hornady bullet is only good for pokin holes in paper. Not even a good deer bullet as they expand violently even.in a Sitka Blacktail . They make a horrible mess. Where as the Speer sails right on thru and you can eat right up to the bullet hole. Phil Shoemaker : "I went to a .30-06 on a fine old Mauser action. That worked successfully for a few years until a wounded, vindictive brown bear taught me that precise bullet placement is not always possible in thick alders, at spitting distances and when time is measured in split seconds. Lucky to come out of that lesson alive, I decided to look for a more suitable rifle."
