I'm looking at an extended (2-3 months) stay in the Fairbanks Area and want to bring my pickup with me so I can get around. Driving from the lower 48 is not an option right now.

Anybody ship or ferry a pickup to Alaska from Washington State? Any recommendations (websites would be awesome)?

you can ship from Bellingham, WA to Haines Junction, you'll still need to drive thru Canada to come into AK via the ALcan HWY, to cross the border into AK.

Not sure the name of the ferry I'll try to find it.

Look up admiral merchants or Minn-Alaska. 2 trucking companies that run from AK to the lower 48 and back.

I believe both have bases in MN. I seem to have been using them alot this winter and still have about 30 loads to go so I know they will be heading north Wink

A lesson in irony

The Food Stamp Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is proud to be distributing this year the greatest amount of free Meals and Food Stamps ever, to 46 million people.

Meanwhile, the National Park Service, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, asks us... "Please Do Not Feed the Animals." Their stated reason for the policy is because "The animals will grow dependent on handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves."

Thus ends today's lesson in irony.

AKsheephunter, I managed to find that website for that ferry. Due to a poor judgement call my junior year of college, I can't gain entrance into Canada right now.

Is there a ferry from Haines Junction to Valdez or similar?

I believe for an additional fee you can buy entrance into Canada. Its like they charge a safeguard fee for drunk drivers or something like that.

Northland Services is a barge company between Washington and Alaska. I spent $1900.00 shipping in my new truck last summer. Freight for your pickup should be close.

Both TOTE and Horizon Lines ship from Tacoma, WA to Anchorage on Wednesdays and Fridays. It usually takes three days up on the ships. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info guys. It looks like my trip will be significantly shortened so I won't need to bring my truck. I can rent/borrow a car for a couple weeks and not have to mess with the hassle of getting my truck there.

You can also take the ferry from Bellingham, WA to Whittier that way you don't have to drive through Canada. The ferry from Whittier to Bellingham started today. It's a beautiful trip through the inside passage. I ahve done it a couple times.

You also stop in Juneau, Ketchikan, Peteresberg, Wrangell and Haines. All are great stops where you usually have time to check out the sights. You'll really enjoy the experience. The Alaska Marine Highway System is wonderful.

If you are going to be there for 3 months and you can't drive maybe you want to consider buying a old truck in Anchorage when you get there? I know it sounds crazy but I have been in a similar need for a truck in AK and when you subtract out the cost to ship one both ways it starts to make sense. Look for one online before you leave and then sell it before you come back.

Even if you paid $200/wk to rent a vehicle, it would be cheaper then driving/shipping a vehicle up.

Call Wrightway auto carriers. They ship cars in and out of Ak all the time from Washingtom state. I think they have an office in Seattle. You can even have it sent all the way to Fbks.
Personally I'd ship it up on TOTE then drive it to Fbks. It's a 6-7 hr drive now.
