plus one other species. Obviously in Alaska...

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Mike ----- I have hunted the Big Brown Bear and with my rug in front of my fireplace, have no need to take another, that said if I won the lottery tomorrow I would be booking another Brown Bear hunt the next day. The man I would call first is Dennis Harms. I hunted Alaska Yukon Moose with Dennis and was very impressed with his professionalism and the quality of his guides. He got me a fantastic Moose that is one of the highlights of my hunt career. At that time in 1999, he hunted all Alaskan species. He is now focusing on Brown Bear because he has some of the prime units on Kodiak Island. I just recieved his brochure for 2005 and he took two all time Boone and Crockett Bears and five two year award book Bears in 2005. The book Bears may not interest you but this simply illustrates he takes Big Bears and that is what most Bear hunters are after. I have his web site but do not have it in front of me at this time, I could supply it later if you have interest. wave Good shooting.

Mike, if you have a chance look at a thread Scarface. It is a story of a hunt I did with Mike Litzen. I think there are a lot of big bears on the peninsula as well and Mike is a good outfitter. If you want to PM me, I can find his contact information. A boat hunt is great in that you can get warm, dry, etc. at night. Also, you can have more of a social time in the evenings as other hunters are on the boat as well.

everyone has a price in mind. this would be easier if you told us how much you would like to spend?
and whether you want cold bay or kodiak.

Mike ----- If you want to spend no more than 10K you better set your sights on an interior Grizz. The Brown Bear hunts in the good areas have been far above that for several years. It is also my experience in Alaska that a hunt for more than one species gets you a representative animal of each, not necessarily a big one, unless you spend the really big bucks for a lengthy hunt. wave Good luck and good shooting.

Mike,
I've been looking too. It seems "reasonable" and brown bear do not go together. I really want to hunt Russia, but even though some of the hunts are slightly cheaper, getting there seems to make up for the savings. If you find a good one let me know.

MaG Hunter I doubt you'll find a good Brn hunt in Ak for under 10K with anyone these days as tag quotas keep the price up.
russia is a good bet and quality moose hunting is available as well in the fall. Getting there is just another 4 hr flight from Anchorage...so if you are flying to Anchorage to begin with and catching a connecting flight to say Kenai then a float plane flight from there it really is not much different.
** careful booking Russia though, you'll not find "mother ship" acommodations there. Also you'll want someone to act as an interpeter both on the hunt and at the airports. Cats
