The two-seat Piper Super Cub crashed on takeoff after a strong gust of wind pushed it into a stream, said Clint Johnson, head of the National Transportation Safety Board's Alaska office. Johnson said the pilot sustained minor injuries from hitting his knees on the dashboard and that the passenger was uninjured. The plane, owned by Anchorage-based Alaska Dall Sheep Guides LLC, was substantially damaged. The crash occurred near Pingston Creek, which was about 90 miles east of McGrath. The Alaska Air National Guard responded from Anchorage with an airplane and helicopter and evacuated the pilot, the passenger and three other people from the hunting camp.
