Greetings I just bought a M 70 S/S 338 - BOSS Rifle with a really nice walnut stock. The original synthetic stock is long gone. After reading here on the board it seems I should replace this wood stock with something synthetic to prevent warp in the rain...so - what and where do you all suggest? Thanks Ray

Unless you live in the rain forest of Ak. it is a rational thought going McMillan or Rimrock synthetics. If you like your wood there is some homesmithing you can do to prevent warpage. There is some great tinkerers and smiths here so I am sure what I have to say may not be the preferred. I would hogg out the barrel channel and and fully bedd and free float after that process. I have only done this to one rifle but others have stated to reinforce the channel with a peice(s) of steel and then bedd the channel and free float. You should be able to use that nice looking stock for yrs to come.

It isn't that hard to find original Winchester stocks for sale on ebay or other auction sites. I've bought a couple this way over the years. As far as aftermarket stocks, well, the sky is the limit.... Bill

Mark Bansner's Hi-tech stock is very highly regarded. http://www.bansnersrifle.com/hightech/about_us.html Check out the 'recoil' paragraph.

All depends on the area where you hunt. For example, I have a Ruger M77 stainless rifle that I use for all my hunting in Alaska, and I replaced the "boat paddle" stock with a Hogue Rubber-Overmolded one. I bought the cheaper of the two Hogue stocks (pillar bedded), instead of the more expensive full-aluminum bed one, simply because I don't baby my rifle. It's often raining or snowing during moose season, and the rifle is covered with mud, rain, or snow depending on what is happening at the moment. So, you could buy the cheaper Hogue stock, or the more expensive one ($200.00), or one of the real expensive ones out there. You have lots of choiscs.

hvyjet; first off. that rifle rocks. excellent choice for an ak. rifle and those are becoming a sought after item, especially in .375. i have the same one in .30-06 with the cheap factory/heavy injection molded p.o.s. stock. this stock weighs about 2.5 lbs. my first choice on a replacement would be the kevlar stocks from brown precision, "the pounder". this will make the gun lighter and the kevlar stock is nearly indestructable. second choice the mcmillan hunting stock. the are many other less expensive options out there that will also work. i am sure you will enjoy your new rifle.
