HI, I am going to POW this August, I have a carry permit for CT,concealed carry permit.I want to send my handgun up by fedx or ups as I do not want to bring it on plane, to many problems. Can I carry my handgun up there without any problem, I will have two friends with me they do not have any permits to carry in CT, so I think they may not be able to carry there. I will bring a shotgun also, so they will have something,I just wonder if I should be okay as I hear Alaska is a state that honors other states handgun permits?,Thanks,Kev

From this link: http://www.dps.state.ak.us/PermitsLicensing/achp/FAQ.asp#NICSCheck Q: Will Alaska honor permits from other states? A: Alaska will honor a valid permit to carry a concealed handgun from another state or subdivision of a state. If you are bringing a shotgun, why not just travel with the handgun locked in the same case and check it as baggage. It's how I do it.... dave

Kev, First Alaska is very "civilized". Where else can you buy a 454 Casull in a grocery store? The conceled carry law there is probably the most user friendly of any in the US. Although you could just as easily carry openly and no one would think anything of it. The usual restrictions apply like bars etc. Nothing new. As far as not taking your guns as baggage goes I dont agree. I usually go up twice a year and have never had a problem. You should insure your stuff like any other trip as things can go south as always but it is doubtfull. Go and have a good time, dont sweat the small stuff.

Kev, As suggested just put the handgun in your locking gun case with the shotgun. Declare that you have guns when checking in and make sure your ammo is in factory boxes in your other luggage. You will have no problems. Regards, Mark

Keep in mind that if you ship your handgun fedex or UPS then it's going to have to be shipped to a FFL dealer, who legally can't transfer the gun to you since you're an out of state resident (handgun law), so not much point in doing it. It would be much, much easier to check it as baggage on the plane and carry it. Otherwise you're going to get into the hodgepodge of shipping regulations that are very confusing. I'm not even sure that there is a legal way that you can ship the handgun to alaska and retrieve it when you get there.

While we are hot on the subject of traveling with firearms, I thought I would post a similar thread regarding JFK. When returning (not leaving) through JFK, you have to clear customs there. If you have a handgun, they are going to give you a hard time. New York City requires a permit, almost unobtanium, to have a handgun in your possession (long guns too, but they didn't hassle me about those), so when you walk out the door of the customs area to go to the domestic transfer desk, you are in violation. The only thing that saved my bacon was the fact that I was able to produce my FFL and that impressed the heck out of the customs guy, who then accompanied me and stood with me for 15 minutes in the check-in line. I expect there might be a similar problem at SFO although I haven't tried it. This is the other problem with bring firearms on an plane. I will also go throught JFK in NY. If I bring my handguns I've already broke the law by just having handguns in NY, I guess I will bring shotgun,Kev
