Coast Guard rescues stranded hunter near Homer, Alaska
D17 Public Affairs

KODIAK, Alaska — A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak aircrew rescued a hunter in West Arm Port Dick, Alaska, Tuesday night.

The MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew hoisted and transported the hunter to awaiting EMS in Homer.

At 9:56 p.m., Sector Anchorage Command Center personnel received the initial notification via VHF radio from personnel aboard the 55-foot fishing charter Sundy stating a man had fallen from a waterfall ashore and needed assistance.

Sector Anchorage command center watchstanders directed the launch of a Jayhawk aircrew from Air Station Kodiak at approximately 10 p.m. to conduct the rescue.

The hunter was reported to be in stable condition during the time of the EMS transfer.

“Before venturing outdoors, carry a form of communication in the event you need assistance,” said Petty Officer Dylan Haskell, Coast Guard Sector Anchorage command duty officer. “In addition, file a travel plan and leave it with somebody you trust and carry the appropriate gear, including a first aid kit, food, water and extra clothing in the event you need to shelter in place during an emergency.”

Conditions at the time of the rescue included 10-15 mph winds, an air temperature of 50 degrees and a water temperature of 42 degrees.

On our drive from PHX to our Colorado place last week we listened to an audiobook about a Coast Guard rescue of some fishermen whose boat had sunk in a hellacious storm. Those guys are really unsung heroes.
