Gents, I have hunted Deer on Kodiak Island both Guided and Unguided, but that was many years ago and the Outfitters I hired were the best of the best in their time but they are long retired now. We are looking for the Outfitter who has consistently taken the monster record book animals in the last several years. We know the risks of going home with nothing and that wouldn't be the first time, so that's OK, that risk comes with the territory.

From the research I did do, I saw that Glacier Guides has swept the Deer category for the APHA all 1,2 and 3 places for the last several years, but I don't beleive they hunt on Kodiak. How are the deer numbers on Kodiak for next season and how has the deer size been doing the last several years? It used to be the APHA award winners all came from Kodiak, something must have changed.

Any help or guidance is of course appreciated in our search.

Kodiak still has guides with abilities and reputations as good as any in the past.

It seems awfully quiet in the Alaska Sub forum.

Apha represents such a small
Portion of Alaska guides. I wouldn’t base a lot off of their magazine.

Big bucks on Kodiak, first guy I would talk to is Sam or dick Rohrer. That corner of the island used to produce some big bucks. Deer numbers have been down the last few years. Air taxi prices up. Bag limit is down to one per non resident. Kodiak is certainly not in its hayday
Right now. 20-30 years ago was a totally different story.

But record book bucks are killed all over the island. I would avoid areas that harbor the unguided boats they get hit pretty hard. Mike munsey is another guy worth talking to.

Good luck

APHA does represent only a portions of Alaskan guides , and there are plenty of good, reputable guides who for whatever reason choose not to join. But they do police their members and hold them to ethical and legal standards. And Sam Rohrer, has served as its President for numerous years.
