Here ya go. Finally got out and took one down. Our local 'bou are cross-bred with reindeer so they are kinda small, but this one probably will put out 150-170 pounds of meat after gutted and skinned. If you look just above the sled, you can see what appear to be shrubs, those are antlers, as there were about a thousand of the animals walking around.
I was 45 miles out of Bethel. I used the silver box Winchester Super-X .308 Win. 150 grain Power-Point. Stock number is X3085. Not the premium stuff Winchester makes, but it did what it was supposed to do.. Took it through the heart at about 125 yards. I used my FN-FAL 'cause I didn't want to chew up a pretty wood-stocked rifle.

It was a beautiful day, but I couldn't really enjoy it as I should have. I started a headache before we saw the animals, and by the time I took that photo, I had taken a Toradol (like a super-ibuprofen), and my head was pounding and I was sick to my stomach; migraines never make for a good day, especially when I had a 2-hour trip home ahead of me. How I made it still surprises me.

I had managed to get pretty close by just sitting and doing nothing to alarm the animals, when I decided they were close enough for me to shoot one and be sure of the shot. I had to be careful because I didn't want the bullet to possibly pass-through and wound another behind the one I wanted to shoot. I looked over a cluster of animals nearly in front of me and picked one, aimed just as it stretched its leg to take a step, BANG! It was perfect. The bullet went in between two ribs, exploded the heart, and passed out making a hole about two inches in diameter. The animal ran maybe 15 steps, turned, took 5 and dropped. Bled out. It was actually pretty much in the position you see in the pix, but surrounded by blood and blood covered snow. I pulled it back and rolled it onto its side so it wouldn't look so gruesome. I was happy with the shot as the animal wasn't alarmed and didn't really know what hit it, from the time I shot it, until it dropped was maybe 5-6 seconds, so it didn't suffer.

The limit is five animals, but the way I was feeling, I got one and called it a day.

nice rifle and the bullets worked well. Caribou are quite thin skinned and whether they bred with a different species would not matter. The .308 is a good round. I like FAL rifle, been wanting one for yrs. and never got to buying one.

them migraines are not a good thing. the BearCat not pictured helped with the ride home-surely. That is a fine snow machine, have one myself.

a good hunt, try out the metric round next time and give us another "tale of the hunt" Smiler

Congratulations,i love the FAL rifle, indeed is one of my favourites ,the only problem a bit heavy -when you have to run with it every morning you notice it-but they are dependable, accurate, and powerful. My 11 years old son is a real expert with the fal .Here in Argetina we made several versions with different muzzlebrakes, one very short the commando fal .During the MALVINAS war several english told a Specops FRIEND OF MINE THAT THEY PREFER OUR FAL THAT THEY SLR.Then i red this in several mags.HERE IS A PHOTO IN THE PUNA .

Juanpozzi,

Heavy is the word. That scope mount and scope didn't help. It added maybe 2 pounds. With the para-folding stock it is reasonable to carry.

I love the desolation of the country you were in in the photo. I guess wherever I lived I would seek out such places. I like the look of the sky.

Grizz007,

I went to the doctor and now have my normal suite of anti-migraine meds I will be sure to pack some of each.

Nitroman, the limit is not 5, it's two on State and private land. If you are on Federal land, it's three.

There hasn't been a reindeer out here in 40 years. With the Mulchatna herd moving in, I highly doubt there is much "reindeer" left in them. It's a myth.

Relax, I was joking around. Just checked the regs, it is actually two for the State Regs. Hmmmm....good thing I checked.

Iki, good job! Get your dad's permission before going here: http://www.falfiles.com/forums/index.php
This websie is devoted to everything FN-FAL related. That photo will make many grown men cry with envy.

Moose-Hunter, yes it is. And my Mother-In-Law tells me it is fantastically tasty and fatty. As for being pregnant, I don't know, when I cleaned the guts out, I didn't notice anything.

I have never used Toradol. I get migranes and if I take a Maxalt just before things get wierd, I am usually allright. Makes me loopy, just as if I had a full episode.

Like the FAL. I missed a nice mule deer in the New Mexico Sangre De Cristos with open sights with mine years ago. He was pretty far from where I was sitting and that was before walmart sold range finders. Sure I shot over him. What kind of mount are you using for your scope?

Curious: is there no restriction on magazine capacity there? You run around many states chasing deer/other with a magazine like that and get seen by the EPOs, you've got some serious 'splainin to do.
