A friend and I are thinking of hunting for caribou in ANWR in 2008 and are looking at the Canning River drainage. Can any of you who have hunted this area provide feedback?

I hunted Dall's there a few years ago. We saw a few 'bou flying in, but I don't recall seeing any while there. If you are using a guide, you should be OK. There're char in the river. Griz there, too.

Where are you planning on being dropped off? Are you doing a float? If not you might want to think about it, it would increase your odds of seeing some caribou.

I've hunted there a lot but it's been quite a few years since my last trip.

We took most of our caribou west of the canning but I've seen some big herds up on the saddleroche.

Dave,

I hunted there for sheep in mid August and only a few caribou where around. I work with John Peterson that hunts the Brooks in the extreme NE corner. The caribout come through around the first week of Sept there. He can offer a fully or semi guided trip for caribou. If you don't have all the gear the semi guide might be just the ticket.

Thanks for the replies. My friend lives in Anchorage, and between the two of us we could outfit an army. We are looking at a float hunt as one of our options, and both of us prefer the self-guided (mis-guided?) route.
