CZ,
Can you give us somemore details on your trip there, please? Did you hunt right from the lodge, go back and forth everday, travel with a friend, do it on your lonesome, time of year, weather encountered, etc. etc.? Ballpark cost (excluding airfare)? Amount of time spent there?

Sounds like that was a good trip. If it's too much to put here, I'd really appreciate a PM if you have the time. Thanks.

Not many hits. How about this. Any suggestions on a unguided deer/duck hunt out of South Kodiak? What is a realistic TOTAL COST start to finish price for a seven day hunt. Can anyone reccomend a outfitter in this area.
Thanks for the help. Tony

dungbeetle;

as per your request.

hunt took place nov. 2001. hunt was scheduled for the previous year and outiftter allowed me to reshedule it for the following year on short notice, a good sign.

hunt was for 5 days and bought at s.c.i. auction as it was a donation for $1,250, $1,500 was full price. my friend was supposed to go, i ended up going alone, thus the need for me to hunt alone.

i was weathered in anchorage for 1 day going in. then weathered in kodiak for 3-4 days. got to camp , had my own large cabin with t.v., telephone, harbor view, queen size bed, (yes, i roughed it on that trip), food excellent, staff likewise , they took me by boat each morning to hunt. most duck hunting was done in late afternoon. shot my limit quick. scooby was my guide. we left camp and went by boat each day. main weather problems were high wind, heavy rain, then snow at end of trip.

main thing was that staff and outfitter tried hard and were very accomdating. can't say that about everywhere i have been. they asked what i wanted to do that day. they even got me a shot from the boat at fox, missed. hard to shoot from rocking boat. beleive i filed a hunt report with this web site at the time, if u want to read more.

weathered in camp for 1 day at end of hunt. even with all delays 5 days of hunting was still provided. i have had other outfitters take the delayed time off of the hunt duration. they have many large groups that come as repeat cutomers every year. thus a 1 week trip turned into a 2 week trip.

met the outfitter in nov. 1999 at the larsen bay airstrip in a down pour when my guided hunt outfitter did not bother to show up to pick us up. we were wet and frozen. he took us back to his lodge , gave us cooffe/snack, dried us out, gave us a tour of lodge, contacted our outfitter for us who is now out of business (wonder why).

saw him at the convention the following year and took him to lunch to thank him for saving us. he told us about his donation and i said were on it.

well worth the $. not often i can say that given prices are what they are for most hunts i go on.

another semi guided outfitter had lost one of his hunters when i was coming into camp and the state police and coast guard were all over looking for him. he lived , but spent the night in the bush. bring a good survival kit. i went on another hunt on kodiak in 2003 and almost spent the night due to sea conditons being unsafe for pickup. survival kit up there is more important than anything else. no joke being stuck somewhere. all the stuff u have at home will not help u, only whats in your pack.

2004 was the first time since 1997 i did not hunt alaska. will go next year.
