So my hunt this August will be in unit 26 for Dall and Grizz. Anyone have any experience in this area? Guide said they had 100% success on sheep last year. ----------------------------------------- "I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. -Henry David Thoreau, Walden

I used to live there, expect a good bear, but not a lot of bears, and a few sheep but nothing huge. No place in Alaska has more than one fabulous trophy species in a region. If sheep are good, bears are small and so on. You should be fine, I would shoot the first legal ram I saw and work on sorting out the bears.

I have hunted in 26 a few times saw a good number of sheep in the past, there are some nice rams but I have yet to see any huge one's not saying there not a real good one there. I have seen some shooter bears, and the last several years a fair number of sows with clubs. Good luck Eagles from above

I guided in A.N.W.R. back in the 80's. Then it was the best place to go for a griz sheep combo. If it is anywhere near as good now as then it's a great choice. DRSS NRA life AK Master Guide 124

I think it's better now. I've hunted there twice in the last few years and the sheep caribou and bear hunting has been excellent. We haven't taken any sheep over 39" but the bears have been good for interior grizzlies and the caribou have been quite nice. Be sure to at least ask your guide about bringing a fishing rod. If you end up along a river there could be some really big arctic char in there somewhere.

I hunted unit 26 last year but only for caribou and we did a float hunt. We saw plenty of caribou and 5 bears in 7 days so you shouldn't have any problem bagging a grizz. "We band of 45-70'ers"

alot of the guides up there are "100%" but they a few years back i know one of the big outfitts was like 2 for 12, maybe three years ago..i've also worked for alot of guides who were "100" percent. Lots of different definitions, i just hate to see guys lured in by salesmen. That being said, the brooks produces sheep, all the time just about i'd love to go up and hunt there, i agree with whoever posted that thats one of yoru best places for the sheep grizz combo hunt. whos the outfitter your going with?

I hunted 26 last year and harvested a very nice ram. PM me and I'll give ou details. I think I know who you are going with and may have some insight. A lot will depend on when you are going, your physical ability and most importantly, the weather.

Jake, you should know who he's going with. The guide has a great area for sheep, for now. In a few years we'll have to see. 100%, don't know abou that but he has taken some decent rams. StormsGSP, you should do fine. Take extra munchies with you. You might need the extra food.

Thanks for all the input and PMs guys. I am looking forward to the trip and will have more questions for you all. Thanks again, Alex ----------------------------------------- "I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. -Henry David Thoreau, Walden

StormsGSP Just a side note here. The bears in this area are real arcti grizzlys. That means there on the small side but great tophy's. espcially considering the hair quality. I've never seen a bad hide ome from up there. On another thread here we talked about how much rifle you would need for a bear. Considering where your hunting now I will say you won't for sure be under gunned if you should take your .300. I took my father up to the north slope on a grizz hunt about 22 years ago and he took one with his 270 weatherby. Worked just fine for those grizzly's. You guy's have me wondering who the outfitter is your taking about. It kind of sounds like a colorfull guide who used to wear hip boots to the guide board meetings.
