cold zero,

Just curious about how you made out on the Kodiak deer hunt. Did you need the white camo?

Not sure about cold zero but I just got back sun 23 nov. and my partner and I got two bucks each. We got there on 17 nov. with 6in. of snow at sea level but it warmed up after day 2 and melted all the snow execpt way up high. I did't see any need for white camo and go to kodiak every year in nov. and hav'ent seen the need for it. Take care. Greg.

mark;

i am back now. i had a good hunt but came home without. Weather played a big factor.

due to weather we got into camp one day late, we lost substantial other time due to water conditions making safe boat travel prohibitive. due to high wind conditions the deer did not move much. at the end of the hunt we were also delayed one day making it impossible to be with the family for thanksgiving.

as for the whites, i did not bring them. i did not need them either. there was only a small amnount of snow up high and we did not go that high anyway.

my friend did take a buck scoring 89, his first.

as i promised, i did stop off and meet eric, from kodiak taxidermy at his shop. after meeting him and seeing his work, i had my friend leave his horns with him. i spent several hours talking hunting with them and also met his friend cole, who also does guiding. they are nice folks.

and so goes another year on kodiak island.

Cold Zero,

I've got a Mt. Goat shoulder mount which was done by Eric, nice work.

Too bad about the weather and seas. [Frown]

Reading some of the other threads here, I get the idea some folks will think you deserve a full refund. [Smile]

I hope they stay down south...

coldzero,
Too bad about the weather. This should have been a great year for deer on the island. But from the looks of things, this might be a tough winter for them. I have been trying to get out in Prince William Sound for a meat hunt, but the weather hasn't been too kind to me either. Was going to go Friday, but 50 mph winds and 15 degrees in Whittier weren't too inviting for my little boat. And we have two huge lows on the way, so I may not make it at all this year.
Were the humpbacks in Uganik Passage this year? I was there in a boat in December of 1998, on a flat calm day, and we could watch them in the clear water from the flying bridge. It was a special experience. The deer hunting was pretty good as well.
Better luck next time.

cold zero,

Sorry about your hunt not really going as planned. Weather in AK can really be a bugger.

On behalf of another poster here on AR I recently spoke to a guide that we have represented on Kodiak for years and he had a great deer season.
He offers a 7 day hunt that really gets affordable for a 2 or 3X1. He said that usually it only takes 2-3 days to get your buck. When the weather is really crappy they go duck shooting which is part of the package. Bucks range from 85-105 B&C points with an occasional buck making the magic 108 points for the book. The walking in his area is a little more difficult than some other spots on the island but I know that would not be a problem for you.

The above is just a thought if you want to try Sitka deer again.
