Does anyone have any info on Roy Lindsey, the man who killed the #1 brown bear in 52'? Am interested in any info on what part of the state he lived, any info on his relatives. Am trying to run down his M70 .30-06 that he used to kill the hear. I realize this is a long shot, but interested anyway. Thank you.

IIRC, Mr. Lindsey didn't own a rifle and borrowed it from a friend or coworker. To add to the overall story, Pinnell & Talifson had already seen that bear a few times that spring but didn't bother to try for it since it was a bit rubbed.

The book "Kodiak Island And Its Bears" by Harry Dodge III has an account of the hunt on pages 297 to 300. According to the account in the book, the .30-06 was borrowed from Russell Hoffman who was refuge manager, Lindsay was the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge fishery management supervisor and had apparently never hunted a bear before. The bear was taken about 1,000 feet above Karluk Lake. The hunt was based out of the USFWS facility on Karluk Lake's Camp Island. The hunt was conducted for the Los Angeles Museum and the USFWS had granted permission for their personnel on Kodiak to assist the expedition. Harry Dodge guided for Pinnell & Tallifson for a number of years and the account in his book also mentions them passing on the bear The book references an article in "Outdoor Life" from July,1953 by Ed Ainsworth titled "World's Largest Bear" Hope this helps. Feel free to PM me.

Jaglav: Thank you for your response. I have Harry Dodge's book and have talked to him a few years ago re: my research on the rifles of P&T. Yes, I'd like to talk to you about this. I realize its a very long shot at finding the rifle but am very interested in learning what you know. If you want to give me your phone number I will call you. Or you can contact me at 231-775-7070 in Michigan. Thank you. Dan Peterson
