Any time I ever felt like my testosterone level was getting a little low, I'd turn on "Deadliest Catch" and watch Captain Phil show us how real men should live their lives.

He will be greatly missed.

While I enjoyed the show and am saddened at Phil's loss, his was more of an example of how to abuse your body and die young then anything else.

My condolences go to his Family.

My wife loves King Crab Legs, and I like them too.

That is one of our favorite shows.

On one trip to AK while in Nome I bought King Crab from a local that went out on the Bering see, chopped a hole in the ice and dropped his crab pot.

Also while visiting Ak shooter we went to a place near his house that sold King Crab legs.

While talking to the lady helping us she stated that they buy Crab from the Coronelia Marie [Phils boat] and from the Time Bandit, another boat on the show...

Phil was a hard worker in a hard job, but he seemed to have a big heart...

I have to agree.......on last seasons show he didn't look very good at all. Those guys experience a tremendous amount of stress in that job. That along with all the smoking, drinking and unhealthy eating habits don't make for a long life. The show want be the same without him. He will be missed for sure.

If it can't take it......it can't stay.

He was very entertaining to say the least. Our family enjoys the show and the hardships they endured.
Wife and I were flying from Anchorage to Seattle on Feb 8 enroute to Vegas for some R&R and his son was on the flight. We had the chance to talk to him for a few minutes and he stated his dad was doing ok and last time he talked to him he said he wanted a beer and a cigarette!
He lived his life the way he wanted to. Our prayers go out to his family.

My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

He seemed to be the sort of man that I would call friend. Another good man gone too soon!

It's a fun show to watch, but why would you think smoking and drinking yourself into and early grave is the way "Real Men" should live their lives? It said that his stroke was caused directly from a lifetime of heavy smoking.

His son was arrested for DUI and hit and run.

Jerry,

I would hazard a guess that it is because he lived his life on his own terms.

Too many men read books about adventurers, or watch them on TV as this man was watched and envy him that life; but would not get out of their recliner to dare to live a life that far from Wal-Mart and McDonalds.
Even this forum, probably two-thirds will never take a small ship out of land sight, or hunt Africa, or go after Brown Bear in the willows of Alaska. Sheesh, we are starting (here in Idaho) to hear people talk about not going "trekking" in the wilderness areas because of the danger from wolf packs any more.

I never considered myself particularly adventuresome, but several years ago I took my kayak nearly 500 miles down the Snake River solo to the Pacific Ocean. People asked me if I weren't too scared to do that. Only the afternoon I went thru Portland and realized there were a lot of inner-city areas bordering the river.

Haven't you every done anything crazy?

Jerry,
I agree. I do not admire that type of behavour when one knows better - I have experienced it first hand in my family. You reap what you sow. Having a son involved in an DUI and hit and run falls into the "stupid" category. Not sure what type of parental modeling (if any) led that that action by his son. The son is fully responsible for his actions, but parents do impact behavour by kids.

Idaho Rich,
Yes, many crazy things, but not stupid things. "Real men" realize they have nothing to prove other than to serve others and follow the Lord.

Rich,
I've done a lot of Crazy things too,Boxed golden gloves for years, Martial Arts Black Belt, Rodeo for a living a few years, been to Africa 5 times,I've had a lot of fun. The REAL MAN comment is what I don't like.
I grew up mentored by a group of 5 WWII combat veterans, who saw the worst of it in Europe and the South Pacific. I never saw any one of them ever take a drink, a foul word to them was Dang it. Working on a Crab boat is a cake walk compared to what these men saw and endured. I guess everyone has their own idea of what a REAL MAN is.

It's sobering to reflect that we are often only granted threescore and ten years... eighty if we are strong... and the days quickly come to an end and we fly away.

Truly our condolences go out to Harris' young sons Jake and Josh and others who experience the loss of Captain Phil Harris.

I guess it's best we “make peace with our Maker” sooner rather than later as the number of our days here are not guaranteed...
-then live a life marked by abundantly emphasizing that which matters most.

"Now all has been heard;
here is the conclusion of the matter:
Fear God and keep his commandments,
for this is the whole duty of man." Ecclesiastes 12:13

May Jake and Josh find mentors to help direct them as they continue down the path of life.

DogCat—
Yup… modeling matters and good parenting brings blessings… but in the end, we’ll all be held accountable for our decisions. I agree with you and Forrest Gump: “Stupid is as stupid does.”

Jerry-
Sounds like you were fortunate to have had ‘real men’ from the ‘Greatest Generation’ help train / model / guide you in the ways that matter. Thanks for sharing.

Think most folks enjoyed viewing the show and as others have mentioned the smoking certainly did not help him health wise, but the stress of his profession had a lot to do with his problems as well.
I had a boat while in Alaska, small one in that she was 30'hull w/ 10' beam, twin 350's, fully found as they say, and would venture further out than I should in Cook Inlet chasing halibut, etc., and on more than one occasion, was very glad to make it back into the slip at Seldovia. My very small adventures w/ the wind, rain, seas, constant vigilance at the helm would leave me totally exhausted and once tied off, crawl into the bunks and sleep for a long time. Out of Dutch Harbor is where many say is the place, "God invented weather..." I don't know what the true definition of a "real" man is, but can tell you for sure, there are no "wooses" serving as Captains on a crab boat and in those waters, it does not get any more real.
