Just wanted to mention , that awhile ago i asked on this foram about the hornady 350 grain bullets at high velocitys (2600-2700) for use on the big bears and many said they felt the hornady 350 come apart at those velocitys .As usual you guys were correct. I e-mailed Hornady about this and asked them to reccommend a bullet ( 350 or 500)they e-mailed me back and said to use the 500 grain bullets for brown bear as there 350 grain bullets were more suited for black bear. I just wanted to share this with you guys . Later Tanoose

Tanoose, I nailed a 300 lb. hog broadside with a 458WM loaded to ~2200 FPS and a Hornady 350gr round nose. The bullet went through both sides of ribs, and stuck in the hide on the other side. The exit wound was larger than my fist. Upon inspection, the jacket petals were almost peeled to the bullet base. To Hornady's credit, the lead core & copper jacket did not separate. I probably wouldn't push these bullets much harder on heavy targets. It's a great bullet for its intended use though. -Al

I use the 350 Hornady at 2330fps in my 450 No2 as it regulates with the 480/500 grainers at that velocity. I have shot coyotes, deer, and wild pigs. I have only recovered one bullet that hit a pig face on at 43 yards. It held together pretty good considering it went through part of the skull. Hornady is right [they should be they make the bullet] use a 500 grainer for the big bears. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

I've seen that bullet do some bad things to game when driven hard. Now if you want a lighter bullet alternative the 350X is absolutely outstanding. In the 458WM you can drive it over 2500 fps and in the Lott it should be even better. It really plowsa hole through soft skin game. Mark MARK H. The 350-grain Speer gives good accuracy in my gun, and according to Speer is built for elk/moose size critters at .458 Winchester velocities. Dave One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got into my pajamas I'll never know. - Groucho Marx

My previous Lott liked 76 gr of RL 7 under a hornady 350 gr rn for 2400 fps, and 80 gr of RL 7 under a speer 350 for 2525 fps. I haven't taken game with either bullet. A friend has taken several moose with the 350 speer @ 2500 fps from a 458 win mag and said it is very effective. Honestly I think the 458 win mag and lott are at their best for NA game when loaded with 350-400 gr bullets. Much milder recoil, flatter shooting, and plenty of bullet for the task at hand. __________________________________________________ The AR series of rounds, ridding the world of 7mm rem mags, one gun at a time.

Paul, Good points. I can't wait to try the 350 or 400 gr Barnes XXX on a big bull moose once I have my Lott finished. My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

For North American BIG big game hunting compare the ballistics of the 458 with 400 and 450 grain bullets with the various 416's. There ain't no flies on the 458. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY
