I am looking to hunt blacktail deer.

I found a company called "Kodiak Charters" that offers an unguided deer hunt that also includes some fishing and duck hunting.

Can anyone offer any first hand information on this company?

Hunted or fished with them?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

If your looking for big blacktails, I would look into hunting the south end of Kodiak Island. Lots of good air charters on Kodiak that can put you in some real nice spots too.

A friend and I hunted the southern end of the island, landed in a bay that i know but can't spell, go figure. We were there for a whole week and saw deer every day, and lots of them. We were holding out for a couple of big bucks but after the first day we wanted some meat so I shot a little forky, actually, he was probably about normal size body wise. During that time I was watching a buck that was on top of the mountain, I would see him every day, silhouetted on a ridge. After about 3 days I decided to go after him and it was a nightmare getting through those alders, following the deer trails was the best way to get up there. Once on top I peeked over a small hill and there he was a very nice 4x4 with 3 does. I put a shot through his head somewhere and he bang flopped. I never could find the bullet hole but there was blood sprayed all over the ground where he was standing. By buddy caught up with me about 5 minutes after I shot him and we took some pics. He ended up leaving to go look for a buck for himself and I cut, quartered, and packed the buck back to camp. It was quite hair raising to pack all the meat back knowing that big bears were all over that island. My partner shot a nice wide and tall 3x3 shortly after I got back to camp but he didn;t get down of the hill until after dark. I made a huge fire and and could hear him yelling and he eventually made it back to camp. We each took 2 bucks and saw only 1 bear in 6 days and never saw another hunter the whole trip.

The choice areas on kodiak are uyak and uganik bays.

i am not sure who the dominant outfitter for the trophy size animals is these days. maybe someone else will chime in on that info'?

there are plenty of big bucks there. good luck.

I know the spelling isn't right but Kiugnak Bay is another top spot for big blacktails but there is native land there. You can pay a tresspass fee and hunt there, at least you could the last time I hunted there.

I guess no one has worked with "Kodiak Charters"?

I appreciate the feedback so far.

If you're just interested in putting a couple deer in the freezer and some great sea duck hunting this can be a bargain hunt in Prince William Sound (Montague Island, Green Island, etc...). We went with Cap'n Ron's Adventures and had a great time. I came home with a smallish buck, a doe, and some ducks including a double-banded Harlequin. It's a hunt I'll do again.

I think it is gumboot who says [ head shots on deer Body shots on bear........Much of the best deer hunting is also brown bear country.... It adds an interesting factor in to packing out your venison........There are few areas where you can access via wheeled vehicle. for deer,, unless you are on a constructed road........Getting up above timberline is a good early season tactic for bucks...........Southeast has great deer hunting.....

if there were sasquaches , some miner would have a recipe for them
