Can you measure a brown bears track and determine the size of the bear who made it??

I heard of someone going for Brown Bear and shot a 6' and thought it was a 9 plus. Egad, I don't want that to happen!! I know the guides guess on size is what I will go with, but the final decision to shoot is up to the hunter, and I would like to have a decent idea of it's size before I do. I know a lone bear is hard to judge its size, and not being use to looking at them any help for what to look for would be greatly appreciated.

From the track a general rule is length of the back pad in inches + 1 gives you the aproximate square of the hide. 8 inch back pad + 1 = 9 foot bear........at least that's how I think I remember it. I've watched that video. It's definitely good for sexing bears.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

my experience has been that it'll get you pretty close..under 8" i've always added 1.5 inches or so. over 8" i add one inch...but i've shot ten and a half footers with 8" feet too...and 7.5 footers with 7" feet...soo take it for what it is...

Since guides are required for nonresidents, your guide will help assure you don't take any 6 footers; or 7 footers for that matter. Tell the guide what you consider to be an acceptable trophy, both condition of hide and size/ Chaz/ Chaz

grizz tracks and brownie tracks seem to differ a bit as well...the scale don't seem to go both ways....but like say all bears are different.
also, i've seen master guides shoot seven foot kodiak brownies on day one, thinking it was 9 plus...guides are people too...lol

In my experience the width of the front foot of brown bears is always a good indication of the size of the bear. A bruin with an 8" wide front pad will be close to 9' and one with an honest 9" width pad is a monster.
As for judging the trophy while it is alive any good , experienced guide should be able to tell you the appx size within 6 to 8 inches under ideal conditions. Quick calls on bears that appear up close or near dark or in the brush are more iffy.

Anyone who claims the 30-06 is ineffective has either not tried one, or is unwittingly commenting on their own marksmanship

I might add, 1/2 a foot is about as fine an increment a good guide will be able to reliably judge. I gotta laugh when ANYONE is expected to differentiate between a 9'2" boar and a 9'4"er!?!?

Mike, how about judging if a bear will make 28" B&C - after drying?

Got a call today from Steve, your moose hunter last year, and he is looking at re-booking if he can get you as a guide and hunt the same camp.
You up for it?

Phil, I'm sure the Herter's Guide Manual has instructions on how to pick out B&C bear skulls on the hoof...

Regarding Steve and Moose Meadows? Absolutely!

I bet he's been thinking about my advice to keep letting those 60"ers walk and pick out a nice, well proportioned bull in the mid 30's and hang the shoulder mount in the bathroom Big Grin.
