Paul... The way to measure a bear's estimated size, is to measure the front foot's width in inches, convert to feet, and then add one foot.
Up here, down the Baldwin Pennensula where I search for mammoth ivory/bones/teeth, there is a bear that leaves seven inch prints, which is an estimeted eight footer (I used my 7.5 inch revolver barrel to size it). Of course, I take both a revoler (45LC "magnum") and rifle (375 Whln AI) down there.
My take on this matter is, its a lot better to have a revolver, than 'I want my mama' against any bear. ~~~Suluuq
