Will be visiting Homer this summer, and would like to take a Halibut fishing trip. Anyone have a recommendation for a boat and captain.
Thanks in advance

Ninilchick Charters would be my first choice in that part of the state.

I don't think (no I know I will never) book another halibut trip out of Homer, Nilichick, yes... pay tourist prices out of Homer, never again. 95% of the fish brought into the dock are under 30lbs (40" fish), most of those being in the 15-20lb range. Not that size really matters, but for the cost of a charter there, its a joke. The cost has nearly doubled in the last 5-6 years, and the fish keep getting smaller. If you want to fish, pony up and charter a full boat go for a long range trip out to the gulf. You'll catch bigger fish, and have opps at lots of different species. Ling cod opens the first of July, 10x more fun to fish for than halibut.

Expect halibut charters to be cut back to 6 days a week... its coming. They will raise prices to cover the loss of a day. The limit on halibut is currently 2. One less than 29" and one any size fish. Don't plan on catching a "big" fish. A 29" fish is about 5lbs of meat... The other fish you're likely to catch might net you 12lbs, if you're lucky. Cost of a charter will be close to $400pp. You can buy halibut for easily half what you can catch it for.

That said you can't put a price tag on fun.

We have been over to Homer a number of times. always fished with Captain Dave Flower. Seems like he may have sold his boat to this operator

Always did well that is why we kept going back.
If you stay at homer stay out on the spit, visit the Salty Dog Saloon. You can walk once there no problem.

Go with the Nautilus II out of Homer, They are great !!! Its a 75 foot vessel and will accommodate 32 anglers, this vessel is exclusive for the overnight charter leaves at 3 PM and comes back around 10 the next morning, the good thing about this is you each can catch 4 Halibut ( 2 before Midnight and 2 more after) My wife and I do this and we bring back 8 halibut, the nice thing is they have a bunk for everyone ( you just bring your own sleep bag or blanket), yes your own bunk !!! your not hot bunking or sharing a bunk with others. So when your tired of fishing, you can rest up and get ready to do it again around midnight when the big buts get active !!! You bring your own food and drinks ( yes alcohol too) and there's a kitchen and an array of Microwaves. they do provide hot water and coffee. They have all the poles rigs and bait they provide, but I brought my own because I'm left handed. The price is the most reasonable we paid $240 pp for the overnighter but we go as a set group every year and get a special rate, but I believe they do book couples and singles until the boat is full, or the standard rate is something like $8500 for the whole boat which is around $265 pp....they are online at Alaskacoastalmarine.com they do have 2 other boats that do full day and half day charters, but you are only limited to the 2 halibut per day. They do have a new rule now where on of your daily halibut has to be 29" or smaller and the other as big as you want. We did have a few good ones pulled in with the biggest around 80 pounds.....good luck

I will second Ninilchick Charters. We have fished with them several times and always had a great trip.
