I've about made up my mind to go moose hunting in 2010. For the biggest bulls, should I be hunting Alaska or Canada? Areas mentioned were: Alaska - 1. ANWR 2. Northwestern Alaska 3. Alaskan Peninsula Canada - 1. Yukon If it was your money going towards a big bull, where would you put it?

It all depends on what you are looking to spend. The yukon is good but expensive. Top outfitters there will have a price for 2010 topping 18,000.00 + bush flights @ around 1100.00, trophy and meat transfer out @ around 6-900.00 and licnse and tags. The animals are good trophy quality average is around 60". By the time you are done there you could possibly have 25k into it. It is a good place to hunt and has many reputable outfitters there. The 2 that come to mind are Jim Shockey and Mcmillian River adventures. Check them out and read the fine print in regards to their prices. Have heard really good things about them as far as success rates and quality of animals but the pricing is out of this world. Here are their websites www.jimshockey.com and http://www.macmillanriveradventurestv.com Alaska has many fine hunting opprotunities. Some are draw areas and some areas are closed to non resident hunting without a special permit. Some outfitters have raised there price for 209 and wilol be doing the same for 2010. They are running in the range of 13,500 to 16,000.00. But be aware that with alot of prices quoted ny outfitters there will be additional costs such as I mentioned above. I have posted numerous times on this forum in regards to our operation. Posted pictures, hunt reports and many other informative Moose hunting opprotunities. There are others as well that are very knowledgable and will have vital information on this forum. Look through some past posts there is alot of information there. We do offer an 11 day fully guided and catered Moose hunt with NO hidden or suprise charges. In your research I would like for you to check out our website @ www.nwaoutfitters.com and also look at past posts by all the forum members and myself. There are alot of good opprotunities out there and if I can be of any more assistance to you let me know through here ar PM me if you would like a more detailed discussion on hunting in Alaska. Hope this helps Doug Klunder

We don't hunt for trophies but rather for the freezer. Having said that and having hunted the Brooks Range numerous times (not for moose), you should avoid ANWR if you're looking for a trophy. I'd look at the Ak.Peninsula or at least SW Alaska for those. Moose I've seen in ANWR tend to be on the smaller side. Shorter summers and tougher climate conditions. Just my thoughts tho. Bear in Fairbanks Unless you're the lead dog, the scenery never changes. I never thought that I'd live to see a President worse than Jimmy Carter. Well, I have. $25,000 for a moose ... You have to be a good salesman to pull that one off, I reckon.

That is what it will cost you in the Yukon after you add all the extra charges. Our hunts in Alaska run all inclusive for 15k That is why i suggest he do his research thoroughly before committing to one or another Doug Klunder

billm I've hunted Dall with Stan. He's one possibility for sure. I had a great hunt with him and would certainly have no reservation about his ability to put me on big moose. He may be priced out of the market in my view.

Kensco ,Stan told me that a come back hunter he would give a better deal. But I never called him in regards to coming back. That Chinese girl just about got all my money the last time I was in Norman Wells Another day of bad weather and I would have had to sleep under the bridge across the road from her place

One time I flew into Anchorage and it was one of those red eye specials or whatever they are called. I think that I arrived about 3:00 or 4:00 a.m. And since I was flying out in a few hours from Lake Hood I just went down there and slept on the dock ... I would sleep under a bridge but then everyone would think that I was a troll !!! I looked up the web sites for Macmillan and Shockey ... I found it quite interesting that a grizzly hunt (7 days) for Macmillan was $9,000 or so ... I suspect that they are easier to carry out - but it has to be a more valuable trophy (IMO) than a big ol' moose ... and I really really love hunting moose.

I hunted with Stan (McKenzie Mountain Outfitters) in 2006. Wonderful pristine moose/caribou/dall sheep country. About 10-12 mooser hunters a year on 8-9,000 square miles leaves a moose a long time to grow those 65+ antlers. We all got moose the year I went. Mine went 65" and was the smallest of the three in our camp the last season. Great people and food. The one negative on the last hunt is that those guides are ready for Broke Back Mountain or even a female moose! I would go the next to last hunt - mid Sept. Enjoy.

Look to the Ak Peninsula for really big moose, specifically unit 9E. The Yukon has some big bulls as well but IMO the Peninsula has a better average of bulls over 60"s in the past 3 years, at least that is what my research has found. "We band of 45-70'ers"
