Hi do you folks get the bib overall type or just the regular pants type with elastic waist and drawstring? Never owned any, no need in Colorado lol ... The only waterproof gear I have is my neoprene waders for fly fishing ...

Smiler

Chuck

I use them both. I only use the bibs if I'm at the cabin, on a boat, going in by ATV, etc. They are heavy bastiges. If I'm hiking in I use the pants style. Not as waterproof as the rubber bibs but alot lighter and work good enough.

A lesson in irony

The Food Stamp Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is proud to be distributing this year the greatest amount of free Meals and Food Stamps ever, to 46 million people.

Meanwhile, the National Park Service, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, asks us... "Please Do Not Feed the Animals." Their stated reason for the policy is because "The animals will grow dependent on handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves."

Thus ends today's lesson in irony.

At times, it's hard to beat good old-fashioned hip boots for September hunts in interior/southcentral Alaska.

If it's really wet my hipboots are up,red Ledge rainpants, and a Helly 3/4 length rain parka. Over wool or fleece or both.

Rain Gear.. H/H is 100% but Heavy and doesn't breath.. River West is very good doesn't breath..I've wiped a lot of water off the inside of the RW after a long Walk About..Same with H/H but the H stuff liner will not dry if the Humidity is up thar..
I bought into the Stika Down Pour Stuff Very Good ,Light, Breaths Good but if I had to do it all over again I would have stayed with Frog Toggs.. When the Sitka gives it up I'll go back to the FT.. Protection is 100%, Cuts the Wind, Breaths, Light, Drys Fast..
If you can dry the inside of your stuff everyday the HH and RW will do all you want.. FT less than a 1/3 the price of all mention above.. Buy 1 size larger Bibs/Pants if your using horses..

Frog Toggs for an Alaska hunt? Don't do that to yourself! If you are walking in ANY KIND OF BRUSH they will be in tatters by noon. Impertech by HH is a good medium weight and is durable. Ask any Alaska guide about FT vrs. HH. Case closed!

Cabelas Revaluation Fleece worked for me on my 11 day brown bear hunt. I stayed dry all week.

You will likely need waders too on a brown bear hunt and Cabelas now has "Wader Jeans" that I am going to buy for my grizzly hunt in August. The have an attached boot and the waders are actually hunting pants. They come with a belt and have multiple pockets. They cost about $250. If you have ever spent 10+ days in a pair of waders, $250 is a bargain.

Who is your Outfitter ?

The first pair of HH Impertech I had with the bibs, I sometimes had issues with the bib buckle pressing into my collar bone underneath the pack strap. Now who would have thought that could be an issue. On long hikes, or while climbing, you do get wet from the insdie out with the HH.

I finally bought a replacement pair last year. The new camo version of HH Imertech Jacket, Anorak and reg. pants.

Something to consider.

Hi Cold Zero, my outfitter is John Peterson of Bristol Bay Outfitters. I'm going to be hunting out of Togiak Lake Sept 20th to Sept 30th. Maybe I'll pick up a pair of HH Impertech II pants as well. I'm going to start fly fishing in the Lacrosse waders to get used to them (I've always wore full neoprene waders with a belt and suspenders to fly fish), but I figure fishing in them at 9000 feet elevation will be a start to breaking them (or me in). Any other advice you have is more than welcome.

Regards,

Chuck

There is no one right answer for AK rain or wet weather gear, it depends on the application. If you're going to be in swamps or crossing streams, hard to beat an ankle fit hip wader, if you're walking through tall wet vegitation, hard to beat HH bibs and good waterproof hiking boots, if you're going into the alpine and it's not that wet, hard to beat wearing fleece, and carrying Marmot precip for when you change from humping up the hills to glassing.

For a person who's just using them seasonal, the Cabelas Bog Buster hip boots are another alternative. I hate those LaCrosse ankle fits, The bog busters are easier to get on and off and will work well for the tourist hunter.
