gbangerQuestion for Phil
Is the traditional 458 Winchester 510 gr soft nose load reliable for stopping a charging brown bear? Is it too soft to reliably spine one, or should one use the Hornady soft nose load? Any others with experiance please reply.

AkshooterYes the 510 has beyond ample jacket for even the biggest of bears. Leave the solids for cape buff and elephant.

458WinMy client got lucky and killed a very nice 69 ( and a half - we couldn't make it 70) bull. So am back in and out of main camp.
YES, the old Win 510 softs are absolutely great for stopping bears.

Phil, they should have good luck on that stalk. A moose with a bigger rack than the one you took couldn't hold his head off the ground for too long!

That is an extra nice one. Sure wish next September would hurry up and get here so I can go after mine. I have a plain wall that needs something hanging on it.

DWrightPhil, wondering which bullet you prefer in the .30-06 for Bear and large game in general . . . ?

458WinMy favorite 30 caliber bullet for virtually everything is the 200 gr Partition but if specifically hunting bears I usually load the 220 gr Partitions.
A week ago I had to stop another bear that my client wounded. A single 500 gr Swift from my 458 Win put it down.
