I returned yesterday from a Polar Bear Guard contract on the North Slope. Bear Spray was not an option for us as a deterrent since we cant bring it on the plane with us and no store in the village sold it. I guess the locals don't beleive in it?

Montague Stevens was an English rancher N. of Grant County, N.M. author of "Meet Mr. Grizzly". He hunted with one arm as the other was crippled due to a gun accident.
The real hound hunter of Arizona-New Mexico was Ben V. Lilly, during the early 1900s up until the 1920s-early 30s. Lilly even killed a large grizzly near Gallegos, Mexico. Most of these many bears and cats were shot with an 1886 Winchester in 33 WCF. Lilly is still considered the best and most prolific hound- hunter in the Southwest, by both his contemporaries and modern bear hunters in the Gila-Mogollon region.
His hounds were also famous, especially "Crook".
