Have you guys seen Rick French's new Dall hunting DVD. It's outstanding. I think I have about four others on Dalls and this one is the best by far.

Yup! Good one, for sure.........two other good Alaskan videos, both of Buck Nelson's videos....... both well done........his site is www.bucktrack.com......I don't have anything to do w/his business, don't know him personally, but sure enjoyed his videos.......check out his gearlist for his 1,000 mile walk across the Brook's Range.

Guys,

I am one of the hunters in this video. I believe the video is very well done, but it still only manages to capture a small portion of the excitement and beauty of this hunt. I recommend Rick without reservations, as he is the real deal. I thoroughly enjoyed my hunt, brutal though all good sheep hunts are, and am glad to hear this video is so well received.

Nice shot on your sheep on the video, by the way.

Did you ever determine if you hit it on the first shot?

Hi there
My wife got me this dvd for christmas. My friends who got me into sheep hunting, watched it with me, and we all agreed, it's very well done. I like to see the hard work and suffering just getting into the area. I've seen most of the Guide's eye(Lancaster) sheep dvds, and getting choppered into camp on the mountain doesn't really interest me.

Hi again
My wife got for me from safaripress.com, they have a rating system (explained on their website) in which they will only carry DVD's which score at or above their minimum. Price was $19.95 USD, shipping to me here was approx $8 USD( central California to northern BC)

Blackfoot,

I did not connect on the sheep on my first shot. It was my third shot while the sheep was on the run that drew first blood, and of course a finishing shot that started him tumbling.

As mentinoed on the video, we dropped the rangefinder over the cliff edge just before the shot and never were able to determine an accurate range. My first shot went under him (it kind of looks like over him in the video, until you put it in ultra slow motion), and I held progressively higher until I hit the ram. It was a lonoog shot, and I was holding substantially over the ram's back on the final shot. BTW, I was using a model 70 featherweight in 270 Win with 140 grain TSX bullets.

That was my favorite hunt on the film. How far back did you guys hike in? Also, what were the measurements on your ram? I got my ram this year by hiking a long ways over some big mountains. It is much more satisfying that way. I think you'd agree.

Yukon,
Please say hello to Rick for me when you see him.

Blackfoot: We hiked in a loooong way before we shot this ram. We actually made somewhat of a loop (triangle would be more like it) and shot my ram on the way back out. At one point we were 12 GPS miles from the truck, but with several mountains, etc. in the way our route showed about 20 miles. This doesn't count the numerous side trips and climbs looking at other sheep first.
We made it out in about a day and a half after shooting the ram. My hunt was entirely on foot, without the use of planes or pack stock. It was a tough hunt, but yes, it makes it that much sweeter when you finally succeed.

Rick has enough footage for an overall Alaskan hunt video...moose, caribou, bears, goats, etc. He said it would be a lot of work and expense to bring it to market but I encouraged him by saying how much everyone likes his sheep DVD. There aren't many really good Alaskan videos for some reason so I would enjoy seeing it come to pass.

By the way, he had never heard of this forum so it would be good for those of you who know him to encourage him about the new DVD. He only works 12-14 hour shifts on the slope. He should get a hobby or something. fishing

Nice video, put together well. Especially like seeing the lead zing through the air. Caveat, some of the worst shooting and out of shape dudes I've seen on a mountain.

You know there is a sexy woman behind every tree on the Slope!

That oil camp must be a tough life, I wouldn't wish it for anyone.

I have spent 180 days working strait with no port visits working on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier, I know a little bit about tough lives, and I would choose the boat over working on the slope anyday!

Maybe so but I wouldn't choose Navy pay over slope. The chow is good at both places but the Navy does change the scenery around occasionally. Time off is better on the slope. Pros and cons my friend.

It's going to be really tough in Maine, financing new guns, ex-wife, and the 2010 ibex safari.

The best part about Navy versus slope is I am retired in 5.5 years. If I would have stayed in Barrow, I would have 14 years left in my career as a cop.

I sometimes regret the money I would have made but I don't regret for one minuite being part of the first strike in Afghanistan after 7/11 or digging up Vietnam war remains, or the twelve times that my parachutes worked as advertised.

I'll have an Alaska life soon enough, and still be young enough to enjoy it.

No doubt. I wasn't implying anything derogatory about military service. You know me better than that. It may not pay as well as some professions but I really admire our military people. patriot
