Quote: I can shoot more than one Caribou, I just have to buy another tag. I only want one Caribou for my trophy room. The meat we get will all be donated to the locals in Bettles. There is a difference in Caribou in Canada and Alaska. Also make sure you do not have any hidden costs, and don't forget to tip your guide. Make sure all you have to do is show up. The reason for the Big cost of the last flight is to get us where very few hunters go, so there won't be a lot of hunting pressure. Also there is nothing like the experience of the hunt and living out in the wild. I think everyone should try it.

I've been following Johns post on "First Time Caribou" and as most of you know my wife wants us to book a Caribou hunt for next year. But after adding up Redhawk1's cost ($2415 for airfare plus liscense and tags) and Trademarkstexans cost breakdown ($3400). A drop camp hunt ain't cheap!! I'm guessing these hunts are for one caribou? I've seen fully guided hunts in NWT for $3900 including charter flight from Yellowknife, liscense and tags, and 2 Caribou. I've also seen pretty much the same fully guided hunt in Quebec for $3500 to $4000, again for 2 Caribou. Sure I'll have to add the airfare from Brimingham to the either Yellowknife or Montreal, say $600, but we're talking $4600 , or less, for 2 Caribou and it's fully guided. Not that I mind doing some or all of the work once the hunt starts, but with a guided hunt I can pretty much just show up and hunt. Why sweat all the little details to save maybe $1200 and only shoot one caribou?

"I can shoot more than one Caribou, I just have to buy another tag." Again that just adds to your total, which is already in the 3k range for one caribou. "Also there is nothing like the experience of the hunt and living out in the wild. I think everyone should try it." I agree, but again, based on these numbers a drop camp hunt in Alaska ain't cheap and I wouldn't be saving a bunch of money over a NWT hunt.

Quote: I think you need to look careful at JeffP's post and you will see the difference. A Canadian hunt looks to cost more. You may want to do some good research before you make a decision. Also a tag for another caribou is only $325.00 I got a wolf tag for $30.00 also. I hope you find a good deal and let us know what you decide.

Mark, A fully guided hunt right out of Dillingham is $3500 2x1 and $4000 1x1. Other than your license this price is all inclusive from Dillingham. A guided hunt is always my first recommendation. By the time you buy all the gear that is necessary etc. a drop camp hunt is not that attractive. Of course some people really want to do it all themselves and have the equipment etc. A drop camp hunt for these folks is perfect. Regards, Mark Regards, Mark

It looks like the consensus for ALASKA caribou is around $3000-3500 for drops and $4500-6000 for guided. My hunt price includes all camp equipment provided by the outfitter, so I don't have that cost/hassle. For another $1000 to $2500, I could pay a guy to show me which caribou to shoot, then carry it back to camp for me. IMO, it's money well saved to do it myself. Now, moose would be a different story.

If you are going guided there is not a big price difference in Alaska and NWT...The savings comes from the fact that you can hunt Alaska on your own.. If you really want a trophy animal, the guided hunt is a better bet, espcially if it is your first hunt... If you are going to spend the money for a guided hunt, I'd highly recommend Alaska or NWT rather than Quebec....There are some unscrupulous outfitters in Quebec and the migrations are less dependable there... If I were going to spend my $$$ on one caribou hunt, I'd pick NWT...There are only a handful of outfitters there and they tend to be honest and well organized...

Read Mark H Young's post closely. "A guided hunt is always my first recommendation" Good advise. Only IF you are a VERY experienced hunter/CAMPER should you attempt a drop camp in Alaska. The weather can put you into a survival situation in an instant.... with NO HOPE of help from the outside world. A man has got to know his limitations. Be sure everyone who goes on a drop camp hunt with you is up to the task. If your crew is up to it, it will be a most excellent adventure.

It will be my first drop hunt unguided by a professional guide. But one of the guys going has been there 15 times and knows the area we are going to well. He has taken his 16 year old daughter twice. It is worth the work to save $1000 to $2000 bucks. That is half the price of another hunt.

I did a caribou, black bear, wolf hunt 2x1 fully outfitted and guided for $4500 and got all three critters. On top of that had a $500 commercial flight, a $600 bush flight, a $300 tip, about $600 in licenses, and about $400 in motels & misc. travel expenses. Total about $6900. Same outfitter does fully stocked drop camps for $2500. You'll need all those same additional things less tip for a total of about $4600. Hey ... Don't forget trophy care, shipping and taxidermy which added at least another $1500 on that hunt tab. It aint cheap either way, but you'll remember a good hunt long after the financial pain has gone away. The do it your self deal sounds like a hoot of an adventure. I intend to try that soon also.
