I appologize if this has been covered before.

However, my wife and I are going to be up the last week of May, part fishing (Anchor Point), part just driving around on the Kenai. A couple of days are free, and I want to poke around and see if I can find a black that will let me shoot it.
This'll be my 3rd trip up, once on a DIY caribou hunt and another just driving my wife around.

If I am lucky, where/who would be a good choice in-state to send the hide (and maybe the skull) for processing/tanning into a rug.

I'm actually thinking about carrying my .375 H&H instead of the '06.

Thanks in advance.

If you are going to carry a big stick, you've got to whack someone with it at least every once in while.

For a gorgeous rug, I'd go with Mike Frazier of "Fur and Feather Taxidermy" at 907-345-8955 or cell 242-6353. He does great work and pads the rugs so that they don't lay lifelessly flat. Not sure I described that very weel, but it looks very nice. He's also a heckuva nice guy.

It sounds like you know what you're doing and where you're going, but if you shoot me a PM I'll let you know about a couple of spots where I've had good luck spotting blackies on the Kenai Peninsula.

Knight's Taxidermy in Anchorage (907-344-5501) did a fabulous job on a brown bear rug for me 3 years ago - even gave the nose a bit of a crinkle to make the snarl more lifelike. Jerry is a great guy to work with. One thing to consider is having some rings strategically sewn on the backing to make it easier to hang on the wall some day - just in case.

Good luck - I hope you find a gentleman in a big black fur coat who is willing to cooperate with your rug project!

I've used Knight's as well. I'd take the 06. More likely than not you'll be climbing after it, so the less weight the better.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

Take it to D&C Expiditers in Anchorage 1-907-344-9719. They are part of Atcheson Taxidermy and they do 200 bears per year. They are very good and the turn around should be 6 months. I have a houseful of their mounts and a couple of bears. You'll not find better.

+1. I have but one rug as yet (a very pretty chocolate boar from SE AK), but mine is almost ten years old and still looks great.

Thanks to all those that replied. If I get a bear, I'll be sure and post a report.

If you shoot a blackie, there's no reason to leave the peninsula. As Tsturm said, go to Skulls and Bones byKenny Jones, in Soldotna.

I use him.

Do any Alaska taxidermists believe in web sites? I can't find any for the aforementioned ones.

Can't say what they believe in.

Kenny has a small local shop and a lot of business is word-of-mouth.

My wife doesnt have a website either. No need for one. She's busy enough without advertising.

A lesson in irony

The Food Stamp Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is proud to be distributing this year the greatest amount of free Meals and Food Stamps ever, to 46 million people.

Meanwhile, the National Park Service, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, asks us... "Please Do Not Feed the Animals." Their stated reason for the policy is because "The animals will grow dependent on handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves."

Thus ends today's lesson in irony.

Honestly, if you have a good taxidermist back home, I would salt it, throw it in a cooler and take it with you. Alaska taxidermy is hit and miss... I have spent 14 years looking for a high end taxidermist and have had mixed results.

My two cents...
