Alaskan regulations require that non-residents either hire a guide for sheep or be accompanied by an Alaskan Resident within the second degree of kinship. Anyone who claims the 30-06 is ineffective has either not tried one, or is unwittingly commenting on their own marksmanship Phil Shoemaker Alaska Master guide FAA Master pilot NRA Benefactor www.grizzlyskinsofalaska.com

We have to protect our way of life. If we allowed everyone to hunt whatever they wanted there would be no financial reason to become a hunting guide in Alaska. Phil's family has got to eat! You can hunt Bears cheaper in Russia, Moose cheaper in Canada, and sheep cheaper in China (blue sheep). You will still be guided.

If you are looking for cheaper, you may need to go elsewhere. If you want to hunt moose on logging roads and clearcuts in Canada, getting to and from your lodge with a 4 wheeler that is an option. Folks forget that every hunt in Alaska is something of an expedition (and quite expensive).....and that doesn't matter if you are a resident or not. Guided prices are the same for you as for me. I think your odds of success are MUCH better with somebody who knows what they are doing, but I personally believe that the guide requirement is more there to prevent the deaths of the unprepared in our harsh environment than to protect the guide industry. Just my .02. Cheers, Dan

You can hunt moose, caribou, black bear, wolf and blacktail deer all day long up here without a guide. For example, you could do a 7 day caribou hunt north of the Brooks Range for less than $3000 if you go with 1 or more people. I did an 8 day float hunt last year for about $2200 and that includes gas driving to/from Fairbanks, hotel, air charter, and food. I went with 11 other guys so we were able to cut cost down some. Do a little searching and you'd be surprised what you can find. "We band of 45-70'ers"

Sorry Dan, dont buy the safety aspect. A guy cant hunt brown bear bear but he can hunt moose in the same area at the same time that both hunts are open? Grant it the terrain for sheep and goats can kill you and so can a bear, but if a guy is moose hunting, is a bear gonna ask permission to chew on the carcass? Its all about the money. I'm just surprised that moose is so popular that hasnt become a guided only thing. I'm not for letting non-res have a free for all but dont BS anybody, its about the money. A lesson in irony The Food Stamp Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is proud to be distributing this year the greatest amount of free Meals and Food Stamps ever, to 46 million people. Meanwhile, the National Park Service, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, asks us... "Please Do Not Feed the Animals." Their stated reason for the policy is because "The animals will grow dependent on handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves." Thus ends today's lesson in irony.

Can a person go to where the sheep and goats and Brown Bears are during the hunting season without a gun? If there is no restriction on a person hiking in sheep and goat country or brown bear country without a gun, then the regs must be to protect the guiding industry rather than the safety of the people hunting.

you can hike and climb wherever the hell you want. Maybe a few restrictions on in denali NP (probably cuz of a big ass rock).
