Chest Waders - where do you put binocs., ammo, etc.

I am headed for SE Alaska for a Brown Bear boat hunt in May. As instructed, I have purchased chest waders. Wearing these is quite an experience.

In Africa, I had my binoculars strapped to my chest. I wore either an ammo belt or an ammo pouch on my regular belt. These don't seem like they fit in with chest waders. In particular, you probably want the binocs to stay as dry as possible.

How have you handled this?

Thank you

I can't claim to have the best answer - hopefully some guides will answer this but what I evolved on 3 BB hunts is that 5 extra rounds were in an ammo carrier that slipped over the stock of the rifle.

The binoculars (large ones for glassing long distances) were usually in my day pack along with the camera, candy bars, water, writing tablet, extra gloves, survival kit, medicine and more bullets. Most of the time we were just hiking to some vantage point for glassing and I did not need the binoculars out.

By the way, I never took chest waders. I always got by with hip waders but your area may be different than those I was in.

ALLEN W. JOHNSON - DRSS

Into my heart on air that kills
From yon far country blows:
What are those blue remembered hills,
What spires, what farms are those?
That is the land of lost content,
I see it shining plain,
The happy highways where I went
And cannot come again.

The bio's can be worn either around your neck or with a chest mount harness. Just because your wearing chest waders doesn't mean you'll be wading in chest deep water. Extra bullets as Palmer said could be put on your butt stock and additonal ones in your pack.
Yes you will need a pack either day or larger. Who's going to carry you're bear skin?

Why are you wearing chest waders??? some lacrosse or comparable fitted hip waders are just fine. Even if your hunting the Pen. or Kodiak, but you say South East, hip waders should still do. Your outfitter shouldn't have you crossing streams that high anyways.

Yes it does rain, just about every where here in AK, especially in the SE. Chest waders are hard to move around in and uncomfortable, especially when you gotta take them off when nature calls...so much easier with hip waders, and I'm sure you'll be happier, its your call.

You could probably get away with knee high boots but chest waders are better for southeast. I have worn nothing but chest waders for the last six years .you will be in a skiff most of the time and chest waders will keep you dry in the southeast weather. A lot of times when you go to the beach in Southaest you will have to get out of the boat in water that is over ankle deep. If you are hunting a falt you may have to cross a river that is deep. your guide is right get a decent pair of waders and a patch kit.I usally buy the hodgeman but Simms or Patagonia are much better.

I have done goat hunts on Baranof hiking in chest waders all day not that bad.

How do you carry binocs and ammo?

I tried several waders and ended up with Simms because of comfort, noise and recommendation of the local store. I look like a dork when I suit up. Smiler
