Ray..... I have been receiving mailings by anti-bear-baiting lobbies for several months. Frankly, all of the rhetoric sounds as if it comes from really good socio- engineers hired by yuppie lawyers who have never spent a day alone in the woods.Anymore, I don't have time to hunt like I used to, especially bear hunt, but that doesn't mean that I want to take it away from the guy who needs it. Would you please take time to tell us about the practice of bear baiting, who does it and in what areas, why they do it (for the meat, i think), how they do it(just the basics), what is the success rate, anything else that might help us to make a wise decision for our vote. In Alaska now, there are many urban non-hunters who don't understand hunting, don't depend on it to put food on the table, are fed a line of untruths by elitists who don't even understand the outdoors.... but are still good people who want to do the right thing for their neighbors and for the earth, who need to know the whole truth so that they can make an informed decision for the ballot. (I won't get to participate in the broadcast as i'll be at work) ....... Thanks. Dick

Dick: I don't bear bait, but not necessarily because I don't want to hunt bears, but because I don't really like bear meat. As you may already know, all the edible meat from black bears must be salvage by the person who kills a bear, regardless of if the bear was killed over bait or not. Bear baiters must attend a training class on baiting, and must also attain the proper permit. The locations are only allowed at designated areas, and one of the requirements is for the hunter to post bait station signs at the location. Bear baiting is very useful to those hunters who for whatever reason are looking for an specific bear. These hunters usually pass smallish bears, etc. In Alaska we have a very healthy black bear population, so baiting has never been a problem. 1. The people opposing bear baiting are animal right groups from the lower-48. 2. If Proposition #3 is implemented, Alaskans can get jail time for killing a black bear that may be on the porch destroying something. That's not all, but since I don't know all the details, I would recommend visiting the Alaska Outdoors Counsel at: http://www.alaskaoutdoorcouncil.org/ This site has all the information on "legally" baiting bears in Alaska. It also has the Ballot measure we are talking about. Please note that if the measure passes, then if a bear comes to your house because the trash can has attracted it, you can go to jail if you kill it or harass it. http://wildlife.alaska.gov/aawildlife/bear_baiting.cfm#ballot

Quote: grape creek, My intention is not to pirate your question to Ray, but simply respond to the "quoted" portion of your post. Take the time to scrutinize the exact "verbage" utilized at the C.U.B.B. website and then compare the rhetoric printed at places like Humane Society of United States, Peta, Friends of Wildlife, etc. Cut and paste, anyone? Then take a look at the individual's mission statements...particularly the parts regarding hunting...and see if a clearer picture of "motives" comes through. best, bhtr
