That comment I made was kind of "tongue in cheek". I agree that you are offered some level of protection with a large caliber handgun if you know how to use it. Take it easy guys, I bruise easily. Jim

I hope you do not have to big a bruise. But I hear those comments from anti pistol people all the time. Most of the time they are made by people who have not, or well not learn to use a pistol effectively. What you find out when you do the research on bear attacks you find out that a lot attacks are being done by small to medium bears. a lot give you some type of warning not all jump out of hideing after you. Not all are 1200 lb monsters most are not. Even a .22 well take care of a lot of bears in the 100 to 200 lb range when place properly. A lot of blk bear attacks are preceded by a period of stalking giving one lots of time to get ready. Or many maulings have been after the bear has pulled the person out of a tree. You can not tell that a clip full or cly full of almost anything well not have a effect on a bear at 5 to 6 feet if coming up the tree at you. No pistols have a place in selfdefense against bears and many other critters that want to do you harm. The best thing is that they can be with you always(if one makes it a habit) and they beat ones fist or a rock any day.
