https://www.adn.com/alaska-new...s-receives-citation/ Anchorage man cited for illegally killing moose in Chugach State Park off Powerline Pass By Zaz Hollander Published: 13 hours ago Alaska State Troopers say they cited a 28-year-old Anchorage man this week for allegedly poaching a moose near the Powerline Pass Trail in one of the most heavily traveled parts of Chugach State Park. Someone in the area on Monday morning reported a man later found to be Logan Baston “roaming the tree line” along the trail while carrying a game bag, troopers said. Alaska Wildlife Troopers responded and contacted Baston, who said he had just killed a bull moose, they said. The trail is often accessed from the Glen Alps parking lot, the site of a trailhead that’s also used to access Flattop Mountain, one of the most popular hikes in the state. The moose was shot near the South Fork Campbell Creek Bridge approximately 30 yards off of the Powerline Pass trail, according to troopers spokesman Austin McDaniel. Baston was issued a mandatory citation for hunting in a closed area. The state allows limited hunting within the park, but on a limited, registration-only basis in certain areas. Baston, in an interview Thursday, said the moose was a legal-sized bull and in season, but not where he ended up shooting it. He said he was about a mile from where he thought he was when he shot the moose. Baston blamed that on a state map with a hunting unit boundary that was hard to read and the fact that, while he normally accessed the unit from the Indian side, this was his first time getting there from the easier Flattop side. Baston said he did not go out on Monday planning to illegally shoot a moose. “It’s just a real bummer that it happened,” he said.
