Wasilla, AK. game and fish processor, Smoked Alaska, over charged me for salmon processing and then kept 25% of my fish. I called him regarding this issue and his only reply is "yes, I owe you, if you come up next year, I'll make it up." He shorted me 3 1/2 large silver salmon fillets, valued at $35.00 a pound. Now, after pressure from my fishing guide he has agreed to refund the excessive shipping charges that I paid, or $15.00, but I'm still out 350.00 or $400.00 worth of smoked silver salmon. Not a whole lot I can do about it being 4,500 miles away, but next year I'll go fishing elsewhere.

Not doubting your story, but I'm shocked. I spoke with him a couple of years ago about doing my King (didn't catch one) and he seemed like a good guy to deal with...spendy, but good.

Degas, I think this is true, but why didn't he just replace the shorted fillets. At first when I talked to him he wasn't even going to refund the extra $15.00 I had paid in unused shipping fees.

Leonardc. I had the same impression of the guy that you had until he cheated me. When I called with my problem as soon as I said that I hadn't recieved all my fish he instantly became angry, I don't unstand what's going on with this guy at all. If the fishing industry is down, maybe times are tough, I don't know.

Not trying to start a pissing match in any way, shape or form, You do realise that you loose 50% by volume when you smoke fish?

Only comment from me is I have no idea who told you silver salmon fillets cost $35 a pound. But whoever gave you this figure is surely hitting the pipe on a regular basisSmiler

That being said, how many pounds of fresh fish did you drop off and how many pounds of smoked fish did you receive back?

My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

People who make their own strips forever are having people wanting to buy off them. Most people don't realize how much time & work is involved; they could never afford them.

People make strips for themselves and a few friends. Sorry to see what occurred to you, but nx time just make them yourself and avoid the perceived bad deal; something you will continue to do year after year.

Ya know, we can put in our own fishnet for kings & chums here at home. I use to feed my dogteam kings. Then I sent a couple kings in freezer box back east, cost over 100 bucks to air ship. So now when people ask me to send them fish, I tell them if they pay the air ship charge. When they realize how expensive it is; they lose all their taste for wild kings.

Rather than try and compute the loss in smoking it's probably a bit easier to count the number of sides you got back. It sounds like he made a mistake and shorted you some way, but he did fess up and offered to make it right. I'd be looking for him to ship my smoked salmon to me on his dime. He made the mistake and he should "make it right"

Calgarychef, I told him that I had received 9 fillets and the records state that I had left 12. He claims that their are more than 1 in some packages. The packages are clear and there is only one fillet in 8 of the bags. The 9th bag has 2 very small fillets, much smaller than any fish that i left with him. He charged me for 3 mailers and only used 2. He said he would refund that amount, but hasn't done so. His answer was that if I come up next year he'll make it right. I've heard that crap before, if I would go up next year I'm sure that he wouldn't remember anything about it. I'll go elsewhere next year, don't want to go through this again. By the way, my fish were silvers, the one who did the processing was a commercial operation, and I left 27.5 pounds and recieved 12 pounds in return. These fish don't loose much weight as they are very lightly smoked, then sealed in a plastic bag and pressure cooked. The natural juices all remain in the bag. This place sells 4 oz. packages of smoked salmon for $10.00 ea. I would have just shrugged my shoulders and forgot about it if he would returned the unused shipping sharges. For sure he owes that to me.
