Thanks guys. I'm gonna bring my 500 Jeffery (it will be blued/synthetic). It will be my first chance to use it on anything dangerous. With my 570g TSX at 2410 fps sighted in 2" high at 100 yards, it's dead on at 175 and less than 2" low at 200. I may bring a stainless / synthetic rifle as well but the Jeffery is my first choice.

Regards,

Chuck

If you get a chance with your 500 it should really put the thump on any bear you shoot. dancing

Yup, I'm taking it deer and elk hunting this year, figure if I make it my "one rifle" by the time I get to Alaska I should be real comfortable shooting it. I'll probably have close to 1000 rounds through it by the time I get to Alaska ... most offhand or kneeling with a sling.

Chuck

"Whew" Chuck don't wear it out, also it won't help if you show up for your bear hunt with a detached retina.

Good preperation on your part and if you can carry that heavy rifle at elk elevation in CO brown bear hunting near sea level won't be a problem.

Personally I would'nt bother with adding the synthetic stock just buy a gunboat, you can leave your rifle in it right up till just before the shot.

I really like the gunboat but they can be hard to find. Allen makes a similar case but not as light weight. You can look at it here.

You're right, maybe I'll only put another couple of hundred rounds through it. Here's my buddy holding my rifle when it first came back from the CZ custom shop (he's a big guy 6'4 260 lbs) I'm 5'9 185 lol ... Don't need a gunboat just a big guy

If I ever get the chance for the big bears my choice would be my 700 stainless in 375 ultra.

I've looked at the Remington XCR II in 375 H&H and 375 RUM, the rifle seemed a bit light for the RUM. It's a pretty reasonable option, the one I saw was going for $695.

I took a Brown Bear with a .300 Winny shooting my 200 grain Nosler Partition load at 2950 fps. I killed my 91/2 ft. Bear instantly with a shot to his heart while he was standing facing me. At the shot three more Bears in the 8 ft. range stood within 20-40 yards of me. Thanks to three backup guns there were no problems and two more Bears bit the dust with the fourth leaving with gusto and exhibiting tremendous power and racket. I felt like I had a pea shooter in my hands and concluded my next trip into Big Bear country I would have something larger. I packed a .340 Wby on a following Moose hunt and now pack a .358 STA with 270 grain North Forks at 2900 fps. While I don't have 20 years experience my brother-in law lived there and witnessed several Big Bear encounters. He killed his charging 91/2 footer at 40 yards with a 30-06 pump gun. His fellow teacher killed a 11.6 footer with a .270 Winchester at 100 yards. Another buddy shot an 8 footer three times with a 7mm mag. in the boiler room, then three times with a .41 Mag pistol before it stopped at 7 steps. I have shot a .416 Rem and .416 Rigby extensively and used them in Africa. I would certainly carry a lighter, quicker handeling rifle into the alder thickets of Bear country. I consider my .358 STA, .338 Lapua or .340 Wby the perfect Bear chamberings. They all would be much quicker to the shoulder in a close situation than either of the .416's for me. Just my .02's worth. Good shooting.

Never hunted the big bears. It looks like the 375 Ruger or 416 Ruger in the ALaskan model would do the job.

I've seen the Remington XCR II in 375 H&H(synthetic/stainless with their Trinyte finish) for sale for $695. It's a lot lighter than my 500 Jeffrey (by about 3 lbs). I like Rem 700s so push feed doesn't bother me, probably worth picking up.

Chuck

Highly recommend...370 SakoMag. (9.3x66) Very accurate in Sako85. Do the math, crunch the numbers, 375H&H performance with 35Whelen kick. 286gr Barnes TSX or 286gr Nosler Partition. Sweet. You'll have a new friend for bear, elk, buffalo, moose, etc.

Here's my rig... Remington XCR II in 375 H&H with a Leupold VX-R 2-7x33mm FireDot scope. I have a slip on Limbsaver in addition to the normal recoil pad to handle my 14 1/2" LOP. Sorry for the lousy photography. Sight in on Saturday!

Chuck

My youngest son, a couple of friends and I went out shooting this morning. Besides shooting our nomarl 45 Super, 454 Casull, etc., we put a box of Remington 375 H&H 300g A-Frames through my new XCR II. We weighed it first, it weighed under 7.5 lbs with scope a full pound lighter than our 700 BDL 270. After 5 shots it was sighted in, we were surprised how mild the recoil was. We then blasted soda cans and water jugs at 25 yards with the other 15 rounds. Offhand it was very easy to shoot, we didn't even think about recoil, I don't think anyone missed a can or a jug. Once I finish working up a nice bear load, we'll shoot cans offhand at 100 yards for practice, then at 200 yards kneeling.

We didn't do any accuracy/group testing, that will come later with my handloads. The rifle functioned flawlessly, the trigger was excellent, and the rifle felt good and balanced nicely in my hands. All told, a good first day at the range.

Chuck

Chuck,

A solid tool for the task at hand. Your set. Try some 300 ACB over some R-15. I bet they'll shoot great and destroy far more tissue than some other controlled expansion bullets.

A "bear hunter" will love the way the .416mag puts down the big bruins you bet!

Chuck,
When your lefty son gets back, if he would like to shoot my left-hand Rem 700 in .375 H&H, or my Ruger M77 MKII in .395 Max (wildcat) on the .375 Ruger case, let me know.

I 'built' this as a bear & moose rifle; I live in central Alberta and of course we have no brown bear around here, but some big grizzlies where we hunt.

It's a 1989 production year, ZKK-602, that was originally chambered in .375H&H. The original owner had it bored out to .416 (the original .375H&H stamping is still visible on the barrel) and the chamber reamed out for the .416RM cartridge.
When I bought it, it had the original factory wood stock on.

I had the barrel cut down from 25.5" to 23.5", had a sling swivel installed and had it glass-bedded in a McMillan stock.
The scope is a Leopold Vari-X III 1.75-6X.

The rifle weighs about 9lbs including the scope; it's no light-weight, I suppose, but I'm 6'3" 245, and for me it's a nice handling rifle.

This is what the rifle looked like before I had the McMillan stock and other mods done.

6'9" black bear I shot May 29 2010.

Nice rifle and bear! I thought about having Triple River put a Bell & Carlson synthetic stock on my 500 Jeffery and having it CeraKote'd for my brown bear hunt. But thinking it over, I just bought another rifle (Rem XCR II in 375 Weatherby) and kept my 500 Jeff (11.25 lbs with scope) in it's pretty wood stock for Africa... The XCR II weighs 7 3/8 lbs with scope which I'm sure will help me trudgin through the tundra ...

Chuck

I killed my 10'10" B.& C. Brwn Bear with a .340 Wthby and still had to empty the gun into him and reload, the first 4 shots were not immediately fatal, the fifth to the neck was. Do not underestimate the ability of larger bears to sustain damage and still run.

I'll bet if I had the skill to put the video on You Tube, it would get a shit load of views....

Chuck
