To even consider that this was not a tragic accident would be ludicrous, in a heated situation things move quickly sometimes too quick. These mistakes are made in micro seconds and then anyalized for hours days and months, the bottom line is
someone got in front of a muzzle and
someone pulled the trigger when he shouldn't have,
it is nothing more than that, I have seen so many hunting pictures and videos where hunters or guides and who ever where in front of muzzles, cardinal rule is only point your muzzle at something you intend to destroy.
If any one viewed that lion attack video wherein the lion actually knocked down the hunter with all those people in such a small area and all those shots going off I was amazed that nobody was shot. What happened in tense situations is called tunnel vision...you only see what you are focused on and nothing else...that is a receipe for disater
Look at some of the police videos, how many of these trained police have their guns pointed at each other and all that is needed is a catalyst to start the first shot for the Sh-- to hit the fan and these guys train constantly, think about the occasional hunter , just slow it up and beware of what you are doing and what evry one else is doing

raamw,

Your absolutely right! Even the best trained can fail in that safety arena.

Charles

Does anybody have any updates on what actually happened? It's been a while and ussually Law Enforcement will send the initial blurb out, then later update with refined details.

I'm curious about what actually happened out there.

Gary,

Just to let you know you are on the right track. Paul's original post was the Alaska State Trooper's actual "dispatch" and record. If you look at it closely, you will see a couple of discrepancies with the more "sensational" reporting by the journalist. In the trooper's account, the hunter did not stand up; rather, he stepped into the line of fire. Also, his age was recorded as being 37 y.o.a., not 50.

I do not bring up these points for any other purpose than to agree with you that, until the facts are in, nobody here will have an inkling of the actual events. If these items were wrong, what else was?

What happened was a tragedy...nothing less will describe the horrific pain and suffering ALL of the conected parties are going through.

This was indeed a sad event. If we and others can glean a small amount of introspection as regards safety for ourselves and our hunting companions...then the tragedy will be lessened. It can never be made as if it had not happened...

First a thankyou to Paul H for posting this.

My primary response when reading these sorts of things is a churning of the guts.

My second response is to truthfully enquire if I could do this sort of thing or have it done to me.

I hope that in so doing I become safer.

I still feel sick about this
