Jerry HuffakerJust Back From SE Black Bear hunt
Had a great trip with Scott Newman, Alaska Bear Guides on his boat the Chester B.
My third trip with Scott and everything went great as usual. The bears were on the beaches, we saw bears every day. Got this big ole fatty on the third day. Threw out the pots for crab and prawns too.
For me, SE AK is one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

Cold Trigger FingerCongratulations ! Beautiful looking bear ! Looks like you had a good hunt . Did you fly into Petersburg and take the boat from there ? From Petersburg there is SOOOO much country that is easy to access with a boat like that . And be comfortable while doing it ;-) . Without giving away any secrets , which islands did you hunt ? I've worked all around that central Southeast area. Very beautiful country! And very skiff friendly !
Phil Shoemaker : "I went to a .30-06 on a fine old Mauser action. That worked successfully for a few years until a wounded, vindictive brown bear taught me that precise bullet placement is not always possible in thick alders, at spitting distances and when time is measured in split seconds. Lucky to come out of that lesson alive, I decided to look for a more suitable rifle."

Jerry HuffakerWe road the AMHS ferry from bellingham to Petersburg just for fun. a relaxing 52 hrs ride. We were hunting the mainland in a couple of different bays 3-4 hrs north of Petersburg. There's virtually no hunting pressure on the black bears here, there are a few locals that might hunt but not many. We didn't see a single hunter all week.

Cold Trigger FingerSounds like Thomas Bay. Did you read ( The Strangest Story Ever Told )
Its about Thomas Bay and the Devil's Thumb country.
Could have been Hobart Bay. Been a while since I've been in that area. But it's a real jewel.
You came up on the ferry, Cool ! Hands down the best way to come to Alaska. Alaska being The, salt water place. What with 2 Oceans, 3 seas and more and differing coastline than a person can imagine.
I'm glad you got to spend some time in an unencumbered part of Alaska.
The mad house that we get once Memorial Day hits in the Interior , really isn't my cup of tea.

How bad does it get? Lots of tourists and lookee-loos?
Hope it ain't as bad as Panama City Fla. during Spring Break.

cessnaNice bear Jerry. I've met Scott once in Petersburg. My son-and-law went to school with him. He had a bad run-in with a bear several years back. I hope he's healed completely. I was fishing around Kupreanof Island and saw some dandy black bear from the boat working the shore. Anyway pretty bear. Make sure we see the taxidermy on it later. Love your work.
